I have lived next door to Carol for 5 years, and we all usually have dinners on Tuesday nights.
I am a heating and A/C professional toiling for a prestigious heating and A/C company in the city.
Last Tuesday, during dinner, I heard a hissing sound emanating from her attic, and she said it was her heat pump and added that she had noticed that her indoor comfort had reduced severely. I offered to look at the heating and A/C systems that weekend because I was off work. That night for dinner, we had her famous lasagna, which tasted fantastic, as always, but at her apartment at 8 am that Saturday, she led me to the heating and A/C equipment, but by this time, the hissing sound had grown louder plus more constant… On assessing the gas furnace, I was shocked by how dirty plus blocked the gas furnace filter was. Since the heating and A/C repairman did the installation, Carol had never scheduled for heat pump service. She had since forgotten the rules for maintaining quality heating. She was also unaware that she could remove the washable filters, wash them and reinstall them without the help of any professional. The gas furnace/heater service took me about three hours, and by the time I finished, I was covered in sweat like a pig under the summertime heat. I went over the importance of heating and A/C service with her once again. I always assumed she knew more about heating than she left on, but she had proved me wrong. Cleaning the filters also helped with air purification plus improved air quality! We enjoyed lunch and the improved home comfort as we talked about everything, including our tasks.
