When it comes to taking care of myself, I’ve never been too concerned.

And that’s exactly the wrong way to be when it comes to one’s body.

I don’t know but I just sort of ignored some pretty basic elements that are part of good living. Instead, I worked far too much and spent more time in the commercial HVAC of the office than in my own air conditioning. I love what I do for a living and it takes a great deal of effort and focus. But there has to be a balance and I learned that the hard way. You simply can’t spend decades on your butt inside the heating and cooling office and home. There has to be some consideration for health, wellness and life balance. I changed my ways once I got really sick. My body finally just rebelled and I came down with pneumonia after going too hard for too long. It was the sickest I’ve ever been. And I was out of the zone controlled HVAC of the office for nearly a month. But in that month, I made a vow to reverse course and make my health a priority. Interestingly enough, the HVAC equipment in my house is helping me do just that. When it comes to respiratory health and immune response, the heating and cooling equipment are helping there. I have installed a HEPA filter to replace the cheap air filters I used for the HVAC equipment. Now, I have an air filter that is cleaning the air by removing nearly all of the indoor air contaminants. It’s made a measurable difference in my respiratory health which in turn has boosted my immune response.

I spent part of an afternoon with an HVAC technician and it was fascinating and illuminating.

I happened to be back in my hometown for a visit not too long ago.

One of my best childhood friends went into the heating and cooling industry straight out of high school. I guess it really wasn’t all that surprising given his proclivity for being mechanically gifted. This was the sort of kid who would rather be inside the central air conditioning of his home dismantling an old clock or some other machine. He just was so curious to understand how things worked. So when I went off to college, my buddy began a dedicated apprenticeship in the HVAC business. My friend actually started working for one of the local HVAC companies. This was a heating and cooling outfit that had been around for a very long time and had the best reputation in town. Well, it had been more than a decade since I lost saw my friend. So when I was in town to see my mom, I asked if I could ride along with him one afternoon. While not as exciting as maybe riding along with a cop, it was nonetheless so cool. For one, it was great to catch up with my childhood friend. But I also got a lesson in how amazingly beautiful the HVAC technology is that makes the heat pump work. I also got a firm understanding of how dedicated HVAC technicians are to their craft. My buddy is continually learning, training and implementing new skills when it comes to his heating and cooling work.

It’s funny these days that I’m finding so much comfort at home where I once had to fight for any when it came to heating and cooling.

This was due to the fact that I happen to be the only guy in the house.

And apparently, all the ladies I live with have a much different internal thermostat than I do. I guess I just run a whole lot hotter than the rest of my family. During this time of the year, I’m always trying to lower the thermostat setting a bit in order to save some money on heating costs. But man, do I ever hear it from the rest of the household. I mean, they can all tell when I move the thermostat even a degree during the winter. Or I’ll hear someone yell about the gas furnace going off the second I lower the thermostat setting. But that’s all different now that I have my own HVAC equipment. No, I’m not living on my own these days but I do have my own space after all these years. I think the pandemic showed me that dad needs to have his own space if I’m going to make it through to see the girls off to college. So my buddy and I worked for a few months at converting a part of the basement. This part now has walls, a door, a big screen TV and a ductless heat pump among other amenities. It’s actually a pretty cool lounge place to hang out. And having my own ductless heat pump allows me to get all the quality heating and air I want and on my terms.

It’s been a trying winter for me and perhaps a tipping point when it comes to making a decision on where we’re going to be living. Since we upgraded the HVAC equipment and put a new roof on the old home place, there was a lot of added value. And we were very pleased to cash in on our main investment. My husband and I have always hoped that our house would be what put us over the top when it came to retiring. Indeed, the proceeds from our home far exceeded our expectations. With that, we were able to walk away from the commercial HVAC of our offices much more confidently. Yet, we were stuck with what to do when it came to retirement living. So we rented a small house with a new gas furnace in it. I’m so thankful for that gas furnace as I’ve had to spend the entire winter trying to recover from an injury. The very first and sort of early snow of the year did me in, I fell and broke several bones along with my hip. That led to a hip replacement and spending the winter rehabbing. But thankfully, I’ve been really warm inside this rental home thanks to the residential HVAC that was new when we moved in. For sure, it’s been so nice to enjoy the cozy house with all the heating I need. I’m also thankful that the heating costs are a fraction of what I once paid for that big house. I think this being a snow related injury may be all we need to move south to all that air conditioning instead of all this heating.

When we were at the theater the other day, there was a major issue with their HVAC system.

I have never been in a crowded place before where there was an issue with smoke, and I really had no idea how many people would freak out because of the smoke! As soon as the smoke started pouring out of the heating vents in the ceiling, everyone started to panic. People were pushing and shoving like crazy to try to get out of the building and I have never seen anything like it before. I personally did not really panic. I kind of just stood back and watched everyone else with amazement. I mean, it’s not like we were trapped or anything and I knew that even if the building was on fire, it wasn’t going to collapse immediately as soon as we started seeing smoke. I figured it was safer to stand back and watch than risk being trampled by a horde of scared people. It turned out that I was right after all, because there wasn’t even a fire. There was just an issue with the HVAC system in the theater. The theater is rather old, and apparently, so is their heating and cooling system. The old oil furnace that they have in the basement was having some issues and somehow smoke got backed up and started coming in through the ventilation system. When the fire trucks got there, a commercial HVAC company also showed up. The manager of the theater got up on the stage and explained everything to us once everyone had settled down. Needless to say, they canceled the show.

Taking cold swims during the winter means that you need a really good heating system in your car and in your home.

I know that this sounds like common sense, but I found this out the hard way.

I’m not the brightest crayon in the box, so to speak. Sometimes things don’t make very much sense to me for some reason. I was thinking about trying the whole polar bear plunge thing for a while there, but I just wasn’t sure that I could do it. I had heard that it was fun and very invigorating, but I just didn’t think that I had the capability to do it myself for some reason. However, this past year, I decided that I was definitely going to try it. I signed up for it and everything. The morning of the polar bear plunge, I packed a thermos of hot coffee and I turned the furnace up in the house. I turned the thermostat all the way up 78 degrees just so that it would be warm and toasty in the house when I got home. Not only that, but I turned the heating system in my car on full blast, too. I wanted the care to be warm and toasty when I got back in it. That didn’t work, though! I jumped into the water with everyone else, but when I got out, I didn’t hang around for the free donuts. I booked it all the way back to my car as fast as I could and boy, was I glad that I had the heating warmed up already.

Three weeks ago we got some current neighbors across the street.

This is a really quiet city, not several teenagers and not a lot of noise, which means that all the people pays keen attention when a current person arrives. The current neighbors seemed savor really nice people, a married couple. The wife was a writer who worked from home, and her fiance was an Heating and A/C tech who worked for a single of the local businesss! He provided myself and others a company card with his home number written on the back, in case I ever needed help in an emergency. I kept the card, just in case, despite the fact that I knew it wouldn’t be difficult to reach him since his Heating and A/C van seemed to be parked in front of the beach house every day. I wonder if the guy worked at all, because the Heating and A/C van was there so often… One day I realized something, and dug his company card out of my money clip. I saw that the logo of the Heating and A/C company on the card did not match the a single on the van. I started to do some snooping, and saw that once the Heating and A/C tech went to labor in the morning, another guy from another company came by his house. It turns out that his wife was having an affair with a person from a rival Heating and A/C company, and it turned into a really messy affair. At a single point the 2 rival Heating and A/C techs got into a fistfight in the middle of the street. I should have called the cops but instead I filmed it on my PC.

Three months ago all of us got some new neighbors across the street.

The partner was a writer who worked from home, and his partner was an HVAC tech who worked for a single of the local suppliers… He gave myself and others a business card with his beach house number written on the back, in case I ever needed help in an emergency. I kept the card, just in case, but I knew it wouldn’t be hard to reach him since his HVAC van seemed to be parked in front of the beach house every afternoon. I wonder if the guy worked at all, because the HVAC van was there so often, and one afternoon I realized something, and dug his business card out of our wallet. I saw that the logo of the HVAC supplier on the card did not match the a single on the van. I started to do some snooping, and saw that once the HVAC tech went to work in the afternoon, another guy from another supplier came by his house. It turns out that his partner was having an affair with a guy from a rival HVAC supplier, and it turned into a easily messy affair… At a single point the two rival HVAC techs got into a fistconflict in the middle of the street. I should have called the cops however instead I filmed it on our phone.

I had a long list of things I needed from a house; If I was going to spend all this money on buying a home, it needed to check off all the boxes, and first of all, I wanted somewhere away from the bright lights of the sizable city. Second, I needed to own some land, however not just a home, however property to expand upon and put up some secondary structures adore barns or work sheds, but last however not least, I wanted to find a arena that felt adore beach house the hour I saw it. I wound up buying an old fixer-upper that lacked a lot of things, including a modern HVAC system. This arena was old enough that the oil furnace in the basement was made from wrought iron, and was older than myself and others by a decade. The fact this old oil furnace still worked so well was astounding to me, and offset the fact that the air conditioner didn’t work at all. The oil furnace also served as the water heating system for the house, and without question it was the best oil furnace I have ever used. I easily had to turn down the temperature control on the water heater, because the water was too hot! I adore a hot shower, but I don’t want hot water falling on me! Since the oil furnace will keep laboring for many years to come, I don’t want to invest in a central cooling system. I think it will be easier to install a couple of window-mounted air conditioners to cool down the first floor for me.

My focus seemed to be elsewhere when the air conditioner in my automobile gave out on me last month.

I knew that I did not have the cash to put forth to repair it quite yet, however I’m a hardy individual and I figured that I could make it for a little longer without it.

That being said, it is early July, and this is hot and humid weather conditions, to be sure. Morning commutes were not terrible. I just cracked the windows, but part of why it wasn’t so excruciating is that I go to work when the sun still hasn’t quite come up. So, it’s somewhat cooler than it would be otherwise. Unfortunately, coming home during rush hour was another issue. Last week was overcast and windy. There was a little bit of rain, but not so much to dissuade me from cracking the windows for air. At one time, I was honestly missing my air conditioner on the drive home from work. As long as my automobile was moving, at least I had the blowing air for air circulation. Wouldn’t you know it though, I got stuck in traffic because of a major accident. I mean, this accident stalled the traffic and eventually stopped it for many hours. I kept time from the moment my automobile basically came to a standstill, so I knew how long I was there crawling along. With no air conditioner the home of my automobile honestly started to heat up. The thermostat read 99° outside. I did not have a water bottle or anything, so I was really starting to get a little anxious. Leaving the windows open offered precious little relief, but the fumes from the exhaust of the cars and trucks around me made it quite uncomfortable. I was so glad when traffic started moving again, however I was seriously covered in sweat and dehydrated. I’ll be getting our air conditioner fixed ASAP!
