Upgrading our home with new heating

Our central heating system died a year ago.

Before that, it was functional for around nine years until the heating technician told us to start thinking about new heating when he came for the second routine heater maintenance visit.

My husband asked him what he would recommend us to save for because we’d lost touch with developments in the heating industry, and the HVAC professional told us we’d find better help with indoor comfort if we bought a heat pump. We had to do our research from friends who had transitioned to a heat pump installation because we needed to learn more about heating and to cool with the new technology. We found several who had upgraded, all with good things to say about the system. All we had to do was visit the heating company and compare the prices of their equipment and their features. One of my husband’s friends told us to make sure we got a smart thermostat because it would help us remember and handle many new things with the new unit since we were all getting older and more forgetful. He was right because, with our older unit, the heating dealer had to keep reminding us that we were long overdue for our maintenance, so it would be nice to have technology take over and fill some gaps. We were also lucky enough to get a tax refund for buying what we were told at the heating business is an energy-efficient and more climate-friendly heating system, saving us money. It’s been a year of comfort and ease because we’ve not had a hitch in whole-home heating, even on the coldest days. My husband has found pleasure in clearing debris and snow away from the outdoor part of the heater as I handle the gardening work, so we are happy about our upgrade.

You should get your condensate line cleaned once a year

I like to get my car maintenance done in the early autumn every year to prevent myself from missing something that needs to be repaired before temperatures start dropping below zero degrees fahrenheit.

  • The thermal contraction that happens when temperatures are extremely cold out is enough to cause some components to loosen and crack after they’ve already been exposed to several years or more of constant highway driving.

Often my car is going well over 80 miles per hour for an hour or longer every weekend when I have normal schedules at work. These speeds are no without their influence on vehicle degradation, even in the short term. Driving on abrasive surfaces and damaged roadways will worsen these effects as well. That’s in part why I’m so diligent about my car maintenance, but it doesn’t end there. The home needs to be kept in a good condition as well with lots of yearly maintenance from one area of one’s house to another. The heating and cooling systems need to be inspected for damage that occurs from normal use on a day to day basis. Part of this maintenance involves cleaning out the air conditioner’s condensate line to prevent a clog from creating a water backup in the air conditioner. I always check the outlet for the condensate line when I’m walking towards the backyard outside, which tells me if water is leaving the pipe at the normal rate and whether or not I should have my HVAC technician clean the entire condensate line. If it isn’t as wet on the ground as normal, it tells me that there might be a small clog already forming in the line.

There are better air filters than the cheapest ones on the market

I learned a tough lesson when I bought a bunch of cheap soap for bulk last year. I started going to a warehouse store to buy as many groceries in bulk that I could muster, but in the process I ended up making serious compromises on quality. It’s not a big deal when your breakfast cereal isn’t as tasty as the name brand, but it’s a problem when the alternative deodorant that you purchased gives you a rash under your arm. When you buy extra in bulk, that’s a lot of money wasted if you can’t make use of the product in any way. That’s what gives me caution when I can’t find a product that I know is of good quality before choosing an alternative. Is it worth it to keep a subscription with the warehouse store if they are constantly lacking the products that I want the most? I wonder sometimes if I would be better off getting rid of my warehouse store subscription and simply shop at other discount grocery stores without the option of buying in bulk. For instance, I was buying cheap air conditioner filters in bulk for years before learning that they barely even filter out dust in my indoor air. My HVAC technician told me that dust was coating my evaporator coil because the filters were inadequate at doing their job. That’s what finally pushed me to buy better air conditioner filters. Not only is my evaporator coil staying clean, my indoor air is also much cleaner and I notice fewer allergy symptoms. If you don’t use decent air conditioner filters, you’re going to notice your indoor air quality diminish.

The smoke from the heating vents scared us

When every one of us were at the theater the other afternoon, there was a major issue with their Heating, Ventilation plus A/C system.

I have never been in a crowded place before where there was an issue with smoke, plus I easily had no proposal how various people would freak out because of the smoke! As soon as the smoke started pouring out of the heating vents in the ceiling, almost everyone started to panic… People were pushing plus shoving care about crazy to try to get out of the building plus I have never seen anything care about it before.

I personally did not easily panic. I kind of just stood back plus watched almost everyone else with amazement. I mean, it’s not care about every one of us were trapped or anything plus I knew that even if the building was on fire, it wasn’t going to collapse immediately as soon as every one of us started seeing smoke. I figured it was safer to kneel back plus watch than risk being trampled by a horde of scared people. It turned out that I was right after all, because there wasn’t even a fire. There was just an issue with the Heating, Ventilation plus A/C proposal in the theater. The theater is rather old, plus apparently, so is their heating plus cooling system. The old oil gas furnace that they have in the basement was having some complications plus somehow smoke got backed up plus started coming in through the ventilation system. When the fire trucks got there, a commercial Heating, Ventilation plus A/C corporation also showed up. The manager of the theater got up on the period plus explained everything to us once almost everyone had settled down. Needless to say, they canceled the show.

Taking freezing swims means you need a fantastic heater

I turned the control machine all the way up 72 degrees just so that it would be overheated and toasty in the home when I got home, however not only that, even though I turned the furnace in my car on full blast, too.

Taking freezing swims while in the Wintertide means that you need a entirely fantastic furnace in your car and in your home! I suppose that this sounds care about common sense, even though I found this out the hard way. I’m not the brightest crayon in the box, so to speak; Occasionally things don’t make honestly much sense to myself and others for some reason. I was thinking about trying the whole polar bear plunge thing for a while there, even though I just wasn’t sure that I could do it. I had heard that it was fun and honestly invigorating, even though I just didn’t know that I had the capability to do it myself for some reason, however, this past year, I decided that I was absolutely going to try it. I signed up for it and everything, and the morning of the polar bear plunge, I packed a thermos of hot Starbucks Coffee and I turned the furnace up in the house. I turned the control machine all the way up 72 degrees just so that it would be overheated and toasty in the home when I got home, however not only that, even though I turned the furnace in my car on full blast, too. I wanted the care to be overheated and toasty when I got back in it. That didn’t work, though! I jumped into the water with most people else, however when I got out, I didn’t hang around for the free donuts. I booked it all the way back to my car as fast as I could and boy, was I ecstatic that I had the heating warmed up already.

Hobby area gets some air conditioning

At least we have zone controlled HVAC which makes all that time comfortable

I remember being the sort of kid who just followed his dad just about everywhere. My dad was the sort of guy who worked inside the commercial HVAC of an office from 9 to 5. He almost never missed a day of work and provided for his family quite nicely. We had a great house that had central air conditioning among many other nice stuff. But my dad wasn’t one to come home and just plop down inside that central air conditioning. Nope, he’d change clothes, do some chores and then help mom get dinner on the table. But once the plates were cleared, he was out of the heating and cooling comfort of the house and into the garage. That man just had to be tinkering with something mechanical at least an hour or two a day. I honestly think that was his passion and he just worked inside the commercial HVAC of an office to provide a nice life. Although I never heard him complain or whine even once, I still have that feeling that his real life’s passion was working with his hands. I sort of followed in my dad’s footsteps in a weird way. I too go to an office. But I spend more like 50 or 60 hours a week inside the office. At least we have zone controlled HVAC which makes all that time comfortable. However, I have a hobby shed out in the backyard where I do stuff with my hands just like dad. Except my workspace comes with a ductless heat pump so I’m getting some quality heating and air in my hobby space no matter the season.

Great HVAC makes my vacation

I also like the fact that the smart thermostat knew to be lowering the air conditioning in the afternoon

My wife can really dial it in these days when it comes to booking out vacations accommodations. It’s as though she is finding these perfect vacation gems. But it sure is easier now that we all have access to rent these vacation home out there. No longer do I have to stay inside a hotel room that doesn’t have very good air conditioning. I’ve played that tune too many times to even count. These days, my wife is all over these vacation rentals at least 6 or 7 months in advance. I’m hoping we go back to the same spot this year. However, my wife gets to pick the vacation spot and then book the lodging. That’s fine with me because all I need is access to sunshine, water, great food and plenty of time being lazy. The only other thing I require is very good quality heating and air. I don’t know how she does it but by wife has been able to find all of those for me for like 5 or 6 years running. That has coincided just perfectly as our kids are getting older and more independent. This last place had zone controlled HVAC in the house along with the latest in smart thermostats. I loved being able to crank down the air conditioning in our room and not hear my kids complaining that there was too much cooling. I also like the fact that the smart thermostat knew to be lowering the air conditioning in the afternoon. It was almost as though that HVAC technology knew that I would be coming in from the beach and would want air conditioning. It’s just the second week of March but I’m already stoked about our next family vacation in August.

Upgrading the HVAC produces possibilities

I think there are times in one’s life where grasping a once in a lifetime opportunity just has to be done.

This was the mindset we went with as we renovated our home. The kids are out of the central air conditioning of our home so we decided to put a plan in place that would give us options. All of our children are now doing their own thing from their own air conditioning. We don’t need to have this house for a fall back position for our kids any longer. But we also really love this place. The house itself is a four bedroom home sitting on 17 acres of gorgeous land. We had our kids young so we’re not exactly ancient at this stage of our life. However, retirement is on the not too distant Horizon. On top of that, our home can require plenty of energy when it comes to keeping things up. While we’re not ready to make a huge change at the moment, our plan gives us plenty of possibilities. We decided to renovate our home in such a way that selling it will be no problem. The first thing we did was to upgrade the residential HVAC. It’s hard to believe that old HVAC equipment went 30 years for us. We inherited an old HVAC unit when we first bought the house that lasted five or six years. But thanks to HVAC maintenance, we’ve had the same HVAC equipment since we replaced that old one 30 years ago. Along with lots of changes to the house itself, we’re adding state of the art HVAC technology as well. We now have a smart thermostat and zone controlled HVAC throughout the house. Once renovations are complete, we can put the house on the market anytime we want to.

No one told me I had to change the air filter.

When I moved into my home, no one told me I had to change the air filter.

I didn’t even know there was an air filter in the HVAC system.

I didn’t know where the furnace was, even if I did know about the air filter. I called my dad and told him the furnace wasn’t running properly. There was little heat coming out of the air vents, but the furnace was running all the time. He asked me if I was responsible for the HVAC system, or if the owner of the building took responsibility. I didn’t know, because there was nothing in the lease. I had already looked to see if that was in there. Dad came over to the house, and he was looking at the lease before he asked where the furnace was. I didn’t know. He grabbed my lease and called the housing manager. He told her about the furnace and said it needed repaired. There was something wrong. She asked if I had changed the air filter. Dad told her there was nothing in the lease about me being responsible for any part of the HVAC system. I didn’t even know where the furnace was. She told dad she would have the building maintenance tech come over and look at the furnace. Dad wanted to know if he was an HVAC technician, and she said no. he told her that if she didn’t call an HVAC technician, he was going to. Either way, they would pay the bill. She mumbling about me checking the air filter as dad was hanging up.

The HVAC tech asked if we were paying in cash or check?

Even before the HVAC technician went into the basement to look at the furnace, he was asking about payment.

He wanted to know if we were paying in cash or with a check.

I told him it depended on how much the bill was. We may need to pay with a credit card if the bill was too high. He shook his head and said he didn’t take credit cards. He had no way to process them. I shrugged and told him to fix the furnace and then we would discuss it. While he was downstairs, I called the HVAC company. I had seen the man’s ID badge, but I couldn’t remember his name. I looked on the paperwork he left on the counter, and there was his ID badge number, and his name. I told the person who answered the phone what the HVAC technician had told us about taking credit cards. She put me on hold and the person who answered told me he was the owner of the HVAC company. He asked me the man’s name and what he looked like. He told me not to pay him anything, and he would be at my house in half an hour. About the time the HVAC technician came upstairs, the owner of the HVAC company was coming in the house. The HVAC technician saw the owner, and he sat down. He said this was to be his last HVAC repair, and he didn’t care what anyone said. He had quit two days before coming to our house. I wondered if he planned on keeping our money.
