If you have always gone to the home improvement store and bought those cheap red A/C filters thinking that all A/C filters are the same, you need to learn about the numerous types of A/C filters on the market.

Those red ones are called fiberglass A/C filters, plus they are just about the worst A/C filters you can buy.

They are only slightly better than using nothing. In fact, it might be better to use my pantyhose as an A/C filter instead of one of those red A/C filters. So, if you have always bought those kinds of filters, it’s okay. Just take this learning experience to make better choices for your heating and A/C unit in the future. The next kind of A/C filter is normally called a pleated A/C filter. They are usually made of cotton or some other fabric, and they are just slightly better than the fiberglass option. Another option I want to mention is the HEPA A/C filter. In my house, the two of us use HEPA filters. I want to protect my heating and A/C unit as much as possible, plus I want to keep particles out of the air, so I have nice indoor air quality. At the same time, I have no interest in spending lots of currency every month on more expensive heating and A/C filters. Another kind of A/C filter is the UV A/C filter. UV filters are nice at killing off viruses plus bacteria, but they are not as efficient as HEPA filters when it comes to filtering out dust and debris from the air. That’s why the HEPA filters are my go to A/C air filters.

I am the mother of a funny high school boy.

He is now in the 10th grade and his guidance counselor and father are starting to talk to him about what he is going to do with his life once he walks across that floor at graduation.

One thing the two of us have easily observed in his college life is that he much prefers to work with his hands than with his head, but well, you easily have to use your head as well. You know what I mean. He would rather build something or repair something than he would study a book and answer questions. But because of this natural inclination, I am tempted to try to tell my kid that he should look into studying a skilled trade. I guess that skilled workers are in short supply all over the place, and also especially in my state where I happen to live. The people I was with and I need all kinds of skilled workers, but one thing I am sure the two of us will always need is heating plus A/C installers and repairmen. If my kid decided to go to tech college, which I hope he does, I guess he would fit best in the heating plus cooling program. The local tech college by us teaches a program called Heating plus A/C – R. That stands for heating plus A/C – refrigeration. Not all trade colleges teach refrigeration along with their heating and cooling program, but ours just happens to. I guess this is smart and also vital for the good of society. Our grocery stores plus restaurants need reliable refrigeration installation and refrigeration service, along with heating and cooling repair. I do not see any shame in studying how to install plus service A/C’s plus heaters. There was a time when all trades were looked down upon, plus it was as if the only people who could do that type of work were those who couldn’t do anything else. Those days are gone though! Heating plus A/C businesses often also have loose schedules, which is legitimately nice indeed.

If you have a kid who is at the age where they are trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives, you might consider talking to them about going to a technical or trade college.

Tradespeople like plumbers plus heating and A/C businesses easily do earn a fine living these days.

In addition, there are a lot of advantages to working hard in the heating and cooling industry. For example, you can take a legitimately short course at a tech college, in a year or less, and go out and get a good job. It would be entry-level work at an A/C business most likely, but you could also continue your education plus get more heating and A/C certifications. After doing that, you could work your way up the ladder, so to speak. In other words, you could work as a heating and A/C business plus go to college at the same time to be a Heating and A/C owner with higher credentials. In fact, you may even discover that your employer pays for you to take the advanced heating and cooling courses, but some heating and A/C companies also like to work with grocery stores plus other commercial properties. So they like to have someone who also knows refrigeration. It’s great that we all have skilled trades people who can service the heating and A/C plus refrigeration at grocery stores and things like that. In addition to that, they are not stuck behind a desk all day. Their work involves moving plus stretching and generally being healthier than people who plop down in a desk chair and never get up until 5pm. Personally, I have desk work, but I wish I would have also l acquired a skill like heating and A/C, or even barbering!

Have you observed signs all over your hometown saying Help Wanted or Now Hiring? If not, I guess your village is in the minority! One field I have discovered which is desperate for skilled labor is the heating/cooling industry in my city.

We both use the A/C nearly all year, or at least for the vast majority of the year, because the two of us live in the southeastern portion of the country where it is hot plus humid most of the time.

That means that the A/C companies stay rather busy, and not only that, they also need to employ people who genuinely know what they are doing. If you are the A/C guy who comes out to somebody’s house, if it takes you forever to repair the problem, you are going to have lost income because a better A/C business could have done two jobs in the time it took him to do just one. It’s not just the heating and A/C companies that need skilled labor either, just about any business that needs a tradesperson or a person who can go beyond just ordinary high school skills is now looking for qualified help. Not only that, just about everyone is hiring around here. Everything from sandwich artists at the local sub shops to executive directors of associations all need help. If I knew how to install or service A/C, I would legitimately want to go to work for a heating plus cooling business in my area. I am sure that the heating and A/C businesses get treated well and fairly around here, but of course they do have to work hard. I often wish that I would have l acquired a skill like heating and A/C when I was younger instead of getting an English degree, which is essentially useless.

If I had grasped how to repair my own heating plus cooling system, I would have been able to save a lot of currency over the years.

Not only that, I would also have a nice sense of accomplishment by fixing my own a/c or heater.

I realize that not everyone is cut out to be able to install and service A/C, but I guess if I had l acquired the knowledge when I was younger, I would have been able to do it. I may not have decided to be a heating and A/C tech for my main source of income, but I also could have used it as a little side hustle. Between fixing my own heating and A/C when it has broken down throughout the years, plus also repairing the heating and A/C systems for other people as moonlighting work easily could have helped me financially. But the dude that came to repair my A/C not too long ago had to climb up into the attic to deal with whatever the complication was. Ironically the guy who fixes the A/C has to practically pass out from heat stroke because of the sites he has to go plus crawl into. Then at my other house when I needed A/C assistance, sometimes they had to go under the crawl section of the house. That, too, is legitimately hot, plus it may have even had the skeletons of old disgusting animals that died under there as well. Not to mention legitimately living spiders! My point is, being the A/C guy is not all glamorous and everything, but it pays a nice living plus it also can save you currency if you can service your own heating and cooling system.

My friend’s girl and son-in-law are the most lucky young couple I know.

She is a cosmetologist, and he is a heating and cooling professional.

She went to beauty university after high university, and he took all his classes and got his certificate in under three or so years. He went to the heating and A/C program at the local trade university and learned how to install and repair furnaces and air conditioners and he completed his program in about 16 months. In addition to the heating and A/C skills, he also picked up some refrigeration skills, and that put him in high demand with Heating and A/C companies because they all want to be able to repair and install the refrigeration units in stores; those cases at the grocery store and the convenience store that hold all the refrigerated items, along with walk-in coolers and stuff like that. Anyway, this couple is the most lucky couple because both of them have decided to quit their jobs and begin their own businesses. He built a room on the back of their condo for her to use as her salon and now she sees her own clients in her own shop in her house. He also decided to begin his own heating and A/C dealership and he is saving tons of currency by not having to commute to the heating and cooling dealer. He does not have to take a heating and A/C job that he does not want to do, and he has much more flexibility in his yearly schedule. He makes more currency too! Because he is his own boss at the heating and cooling supplier and she is her own boss in the beauty salon, they have now decided to begin growing their little family. Their children will be honestly lucky because they will be able to spend more time with their parents and less time in afternoon care. When I call for air conditioner repair or maybe even AC consulting in my condo, and when it is time to get a newer heating and A/C system, I am going to call my friend’s son-in-law to get the best heating and A/C repair price I can and to support the young and smart entrepreneurs.

Have you consistently been a guy, or are you now a young guy who thinks it is a great plan to be your own boss? I am in my late fifties and I’m thinking about retirement nowadays, and looking back on my life I do realize that I would have been better off studying a trade because I have an entrepreneurial spirit. I have done a side hustle, freelance writing, for at least twenty years now, and that is okay, however it is not the same as being an entrepreneur. So if you have a son or daughter who wants to be his or her own boss, I highly propose that you teach them to try studying a trade. For example, if your boy learns how to be a cosmetologist, he can open his own beauty shop. If your girl learned how to be a heating and A/C professional, one afternoon she can also open her own heating and cooling store. Of course, she would have to go to university after high school, however most heating and A/C programs are less than two years long. In fact, the tech university near me has a heating and A/C program that is only 14 months long. That’s just a year and two months to learn how to be a heating and cooling professional. There are many certifications for different things in the heating and A/C industry, and the people in the industry can learn more credentials as they go along. Also, heating and cooling companies are consistently looking for good, skilled workers. After finally working for other people for a decade or so, it is most likely that your son could and would decide to open his own heating and cooling business. Then he could be his own boss! The only people that would tell him what to do would be the customers, because he would consistently want to be serving them the best way he could.

Are you a guy who likes to go out and get all the latest gadgets? Or do you prefer to hang back and let other people spend the high prices while you just watch and see what happens? Personally, I am the ladder, and I am not quick to embrace any kind of technology, much less heating and A/C technology.

That being said, I have various siblings who are both into gadgetry and technology, and they both have all kinds of heating and A/C technology that I do not have.

Both of them have what is called heating and A/C with zone control. Heating and A/C with zone control means that you set your air conditioner unit up so that your condo is cut into different areas, called zones, and each one of those zones can be controlled separately from the others. In other words, you can use less air conditioner in a room that does not have people in it for example. To illustrate, both of my siblings have three story houses. Both have large homes, then yet one sibling lives with only his wife, and the other sibling lives only by himself. Therefore, it makes great sense to turn the air conditioner off on whatever floor you are not using. At least, you can turn the control unit setting up a few degrees on whichever floor does not get the most use. That will normally be the ground floor of course. However, when I go to visit my sibling, I normally stay in an upstairs home office, which means he has to control the control unit on the next floor. Even within the zone of the top floor, he can make the AC temperature lower in just my home office than it is in the other home offices. It’s absolutely kind of amazing.

What are some of the things you can do to lower your cooling or heating bill? If it is an air conditioner, one thing you can do is to begin outside.

That is, plant some trees or bushes that will supply shade as having shade keeps your AC from having to begin with a control unit that is way too high. Another thing to do is to have curtains or blinds in your windows, and personally I love to use insulated curtains, otherwise known as blackout drapes. They absolutely do keep out the sunlight and the light, and I suppose for sure that my AC does not have to work so much when I have the blackout curtains closed. Another thing to do is to make sure that you change the AC air filter on a normal and regular basis. I have a cat and I prefer to change my AC filters every month. Other people do not find that their AC filter is at all dirty after a month and if that is the case for you, you can possibly stretch it to numerous months. However even if your AC filter does not look dirty after numerous months, you should still change it. Another thing to do to save on your air conditioner and have your house be more efficient is to use ceiling fans to your advantage. I have never had a condo without ceiling fans down here in the southeast and I never will. Sitting under a ceiling fan makes you assume it is cooler even though the temperature is not any lower than it is without the fan. This means you can have your control unit set a few degrees higher and you’ll still be just as comfortable.

I live in the southeast, and truth be told, I spend way more currency on my air conditioner than I do on my heating. Even so, I do understand the fact that millions of people are looking for ways to save currency once it is time to turn the furnace on. In my neck of the woods, everyone has electric heating systems that are part of the central heating and cooling system. All that is involved for people around here is to simply change the switch on their control unit, and moving the control unit switch from cooling to heating is absolutely all the people have to do once freezing weather arrives. Other people have much more efficient types of furnaces and often the air conditioner and the heating are not a part of one central HVAC unit. Although these types of furnaces are generally more efficient than central heating, because of the severe freezing and the long time that winter time is upon us, we are all still looking for ways to save cash when it comes to the heating bill each winter. The first thing you should do is seal any leaks you might have. Get some caulking and just go around the windows and the doors. This will help keep the freezing air out and your gas furnace will not have to work as hard. Another thing you should do is let there be light. Open your curtains and let the sunlight shine naturally like a gas furnace so that your air is already as heated as it can be when the gas furnace engages. The third thing you should do is try to wear comfy warm clothes even around the condo and put an extra blanket on the bed. This may seem obvious, however lots of folks prefer to walk around in shorts or just a t-shirt, which is just putting extra pressure on your gas furnace.
