I am the mother of a middle school kid, she is now in the eleventh grade, and her guidance counselor and her father and I are starting to talk to him about what she is going to do with her life once she walks across that stage at graduation. One thing both of us have observed in her school life is that she much prefers to work with her hands than with her head! One place I have learned that is desperate for skilled work are the heating and cooling companies in my city.

The two of us use the air conditioning nearly all year, or at least for the vast majority of the year, because both of us live in the southeastern portion of the country where it is tepid and humid most of the time. That means, I am sure, the air conditioning companies stay rather busy. Not only that, they also need to hire people who absolutely know exactly what they are doing. If you are the A/C woman who comes out to somebody’s house, if it takes you forever to service the problem, you are going to lose money because a better air conditioning serviceman could have done more than one task in the time it took her to do one. It’s not just the heating, ventilation, and A/C companies that need skilled labor, however just about any dealer that needs a tradesperson or a lady who can go beyond just moderate high school skills is now looking for qualified help. Not only that, just about everyone is hiring around here, and everything from sandwich artists at the local sub shops to executive directors of associations all need help. If I knew how to install or service air conditioning, I would absolutely want to go to work for a heating and cooling dealer in my area. I am sure that the heating, ventilation, and A/C servicemen get treated well and fairly around here, however they do have to work hard. I often wish that I would have learned a skill about heating, ventilation, and A/C when I was younger instead of getting an English degree, which is essentially useless.

My friend’s daughter and son-in-law are the most fortunate young couple I know. She is a cosmetologist, and he is a heating and cooling technician. She went to beauty school after high school, and she took all her classes and got her certificate in under two years. He went to the HVAC program at the local trade school and learned how to install and repair furnaces and air conditioners. He completed his program in 16 months. In addition to the HVAC skills, he also learned Refrigeration skills, and that put him in high demand with HVAC companies because they all want to be able to repair and install the refrigeration units at stores. you know what I’m talking about. Those cases at the grocery store and the convenience store that hold all the refrigerated items. Walk-in coolers and stuff like that. Anyway, this couple is the most fortunate couple because both of them have decided to quit their jobs and start their own businesses. He built a room on the back of their house for her to use as her salon. Now she sees her own clients in her own shop in her own house. He also decided to start his own HVAC company. He is saving tons of money by not having to commute to the heating and cooling company, he does not have to take a HVAC business that he does not want to do, and he has much more flexibility in his daily schedule. He makes more money too! Because he is his own boss at the heating and cooling company and she is her own boss in the beauty salon, they have now decided to start growing their little family. Their children will be very lucky because they will be able to spend more time with their parents and less time in daycare. When I call for air conditioning repair or maybe even AC Consulting in my house when it is time to get a new HVAC system, I am definitely going to call my friend’s son-in-law to get the best HVAC repair price I can and to support the young and smart entrepreneurs.

Have you always been a person or are you now a young person who thinks it is a good idea to Be Your Own Boss? I am in my late fifties and thinking about retirement nowadays, and looking back on my life I do realize that I would have been better off learning a trade.

That is because I have an entrepreneurial spirit.

I have done a side hustle, freelance writing, for at least twenty years now, and that is okay but it is not the same as being an entrepreneur. So if you have a son or daughter who wants to be his or her own boss, I highly recommend that you teach them to try learning a trade. For example, if your daughter learns how to be a cosmetologist, she can open her own beauty shop. If your son learned how to be an HVAC technician, one day he can also open his own Heating and Cooling company. Of course, he would have to go to school after high school, but most HVAC programs are less than 2 years long. In fact, the tech school near me has an HVAC program that is only 16 months long. That’s just a year and 4 months to learn how to be a heating and cooling technician. There are many certifications for different things in the HVAC industry, and people in the industry can learn more credentials as they go along. Also, heating and cooling companies are always looking for good, skilled workers. After working for other people for a decade or so, it is most likely that your son could and would decide to open his own Heating and Cooling business. Then he could be his own boss! The only people that would tell him what to do would be the customers, because he would always want to be serving them the best way he could.

Are you a person who likes to go out and get all the latest gadgets? Or do you prefer to hang back and let other people spend the high prices while you just watch and see what happens? Personally, I am the ladder, and I’m not quick to embrace any kind of Technology much less HVAC technology.

That being said, I have two brothers who are both into gadgetry And Technology.

They both have all kinds of HVAC technology that I do not have. Both of them have what is called HVAC with Zone control. HVAC with Zone control means that you set your air conditioning system up so that your house is split into different areas, called zones, and each one of those zones can be controlled separately from the others. In other words, you can use less air conditioning in a room that does not have people in it, for example. To illustrate, both of my brothers have two story houses. Both have large homes. Yet one brother lives with only his wife, and the other brother lives with only himself. Therefore, it makes good sense to turn the air conditioning off on whatever floor you are not using. At least, you can turn the thermostat setting up a few degrees on whichever floor does not get the most use. That will normally be the ground floor, of course. However, when I go to visit my brother, I normally stay in an upstairs bedroom, which means he has to control the thermostat on the second floor. Even within the zone of the second floor, he can make the AC temperature lower in just my bedroom than it is in the other bedrooms. It’s really kind of amazing.

Another thing to do to save on your air conditioning and have your home be more efficient is to Use ceiling fans to your advantage. I have never had a house without ceiling fans down here in the Southeast, and I never will. Sitting under a ceiling fan makes you feel cooler even though the temperature is not any lower than it is without the fan. This means you can have your thermostat set a few degrees higher and still be just as comfortable.
