Our Halloween gathering was being held in the basement.

All of us had all the plans for our Halloween made, & our wife was decorating, but she had the haunted room all ready for visitors when she came flying up the stairs.

I thought she was going to scream & say the basement was entirely haunted, which is what she tried every year, but this year, she was even more frightened & told myself and others this was the scariest Halloween every one of us could imagine.

She heard a noise coming from the oil furnace, & she was afraid it was going to die on us. She didn’t need to say anything more. I was already calling the Heating & A/C supplier. I wasn’t going to allow a broken oil furnace to ruin our annual Halloween gathering. The Heating & A/C serviceman said she would be at the home in about several minutes, which gave us plenty of time to have the oil furnace repaired & ready for the gathering… By the time she arrived, the oil furnace was dead in the water, & the home was cooling quickly. I had the fireplace going, however I sad it would not keep the home sizzling enough. All of us had a couple of space heating systems every one of us planned on putting in the basement, just in case, however every one of us wanted to hold off using them until every one of us found out if the Heating & A/C serviceman was going to arrive in time… When our kid got lake home from university, she asked why it was so freezing in the house, & every one of us told him the oil furnace was broken. She ran to neighborhood & picked up a gas fireplace for the basement. She said it would save us currency & it would be a great addition to the holiday mood.

My Dad told myself and others she wanted to transport in with me.

I knew Dad was getting up in age, & she was having a hard time getting around, however i had recently divorced & had a multiple-family room, multiple-bathroom ranch home.

She asked if she could transport in with myself and others if she sold her house.

She would put all the currency in a bank account with both our names, & every one of us could use the currency for any repairs I needed for the home & for household expenses. I had to give this a lot of thought, because Dad had a lot of special needs. I didn’t mind forfeiting our master family room with the en suite powder room, however I would need to make the powder room handicapped friendly for her. I already knew I was going to need a current oil furnace & I was planning on installing central air conditioning, however I would need to install zone control with Dad here. If I agree, I’ll undoubtedly also install a smart thermostat. I would not need to worry about her leaving the thermostat set at eighty all morning long because I could use our iPhone & reset the thermostat whenever I saw it was up that high, however after a week, I called & told her what work I needed to do to the house, & she was so happy she was crying. She said she had already put her home on the market, however if I didn’t want her with me, she understood. She was going to get a small home in a single of those highrises where they had dentists on duty all the time. I think I appreciate her staying with me.

It took them a week to repair my furnace.

I didn’t know why, but it took my husband and brother a week to repair my furnace, and it still wasn’t working right. I didn’t want them touching the furnace. I hate when they get together repairing anything in my home, and my sister feels the same way. I don’t know why we allow it in the first place, but somehow, we end up going along with their crazy scheming to work on all our appliances. The only reason I said yes to them working on the furnace last week was because I thought it would be an easy fix. I really didn’t think it needed much more than a new air filter, and maybe some cleaning. By the time they gave up, I had no heating, and I was calling the HVAC company to make the repairs. The HVAC technician cleaned out the mouse nest that had settled around the burner during the summer. He repaired what my husband and his brother did, and it cost me more than if I had paid for the maintenance. He asked me what happened to the furnace? I explained that the local handy persons thought they could make some repairs and clean the furnace better than the professionals. He laughed and told me I had to learn to keep my husband and brother away from the furnace, and reminded me what they did to the air conditioning unit last year. I wished I had forgotten, because I could have said he just had a winning smile, but he had a winning smile and all sense goes away when he uses it on me.

Our son wanted to be an HVAC technician.

From the time our son could walk and talk, he said he wanted to be an HVAC technician. For his sixth birthday, my husband bought him a child-sized tool box. They were proper tools, but made for a child’s hand. He helped his dad work on the HVAC system every chance he got. By the time he was 12, he was already changing the air filters in the furnace and air conditioning unit. During his senior year in high school, they had a job fair at the high school, and all juniors and seniors were required to attend. They had a booth with a couple of HVAC technicians there. My son was excited to go to the job fair, hoping there would be HVAC technicians. He said he had a lot of questions about the job. I wished him luck and told him to check out more than just the HVAC display, even though I knew he wouldn’t. When he got home that evening, he was screaming to my husband and me. He said he had put in several applications while at the job fair. He was hoping to have a job during the summer and go to school in the fall. We were both eager to know where he put the applications in to, but he was already running up the steps to his room. My husband was going to knock on his door, but he heard him talking on the phone and figured he could talk to him at dinner. By the time I had dinner ready, he was talking away to his dad. He said he put in applications to both HVAC companies.

My dog acted like a monster, but he was really a pussycat.

The HVAC technician asked if I was going to put them away, but I told him none of them would move as long as Charlie was calm.

Charlie was Mastiff and St. Bernard mix. He looked and acted like a monster dog, but he was really a pussycat. His best friends are a cat and a Chihuahua. ChiChi is the dangerous dog, but they seldom take her serious. She will start yapping and acting brave, but she hides behind Charlie while doing it. Milly, the cat, tucks herself into Charlie’s side and naps most of the time, and he won’t move until she is awake. Whenever the doorbell rings, he barks, which echoes through the house, and lets me know someone is there. He will jump up at the door, and since he is looking out the window that is almost seven feet off the ground, whoever is outside gets put on alert. When the HVAC technician showed up for the first time, he almost fell off the porch; he backed up so quickly. I said his name, and Charlie went back over and looked at me like I had just punished him. The HVAC technician asked if I was going to put them away, but I told him none of them would move as long as Charlie was calm. Before the HVAC technician left, Charlie made his way to the basement to check out this new person. He crept down the stairs, which had me and the HVAC technician laughing. He was crawling on his belly until he got close enough for me to pet him. He is now good friends with the HVAC technician, and he barks at ChiChi to keep him quiet and away from the HVAC technician.

I wondered if everyone had this much trouble with pets and HVAC technicians?

I had three dogs and two cats in our family.

They were my fur babies, and I took care of them like they were my own children. I wanted them to be a part of the family and everyone accepted them as being my babies. The only people who didn’t accept my fur babies as mine was when I had the HVAC technician at my house. I didn’t think it was right that they could dictate where my babies were allowed to be. I would get a call from the HVAC company, telling me I had to have the ‘animals’ locked up before their HVAC technician would come into the house or on the property. I never locked my babies up and I didn’t think the HVAC technician had the right to request it. I usually put them in their room and closed the door, but Ally wasn’t feeling well. I wanted her next to me so I could monitor her. I got the phone call half an hour before the HVAC technician arrived to work on my furnace, and I put my other babies in their bedroom when his service van drove into the driveway. Ally was lying on the sofa with her head lolling off the side. He took one look at Ally and refused to come into the house. I promised him she wouldn’t bother him because she was sick, but he wouldn’t budge. When Ally saw the HVAC technician at the door, she growled, because she knew he was going to make her go away. I wondered if everyone had problems with their animals, like I did when the HVAC technician arrived.

I couldn't believe it when I got the bill for the repairs.

When I looked at the bottom line, I laughed

When I had the new HVAC system installed in our new home, we also chose a Smart Thermostat to go with it. There was an app that went with the thermostat that gave us the ability to check the temperature in the house when we weren’t at home. We could set the thermostats in individual rooms, and see if there were any malfunctions in the HVAC system. The best part was that if we were on vacation, they programmed the HVAC company’s phone number into the thermostat. Any problems that arise would alert the HVAC company and they could make the repairs before anything happened. I was glad we had this precaution installed in our thermostat when we went on vacation last winter. We went to the mountains for a week-long ski trip. While there, we got a text from the HVAC company that there was a problem with the furnace and the HVAC company had already taken care of the situation. The bill would be mailed to us and we could pay it at our convenience. I couldn’t believe it when I got the bill for the repairs. I thought we still had a warranty on our furnace, and I didn’t expect all these charges. When I looked at the bottom line, I laughed. It showed the cost if I hadn’t had an extended warranty and then an N/C after it. I called the HVAC company and told them I got the bill and thanked them for their quick service. Along with the warranty, I had a service agreement that gave me priority and they did not put me in the queue with people who were just requiring service.

My daughter had a crush on the HVAC technician.

My daughter was only four-years-old, but she loved the HVAC technician.

I would often hear her talking on her play phone, and she would be talking to the HVAC technician. Last month, they were installing a new furnace in our house. She was forever following him around and talking to him about kids. She wanted to know if he had kids and if he had a wife, because her daddy died in a car accident. She told me she loved the HVAC technician and if she was too little to marry him, I could marry him. My husband had only been gone for two years, and I wasn’t ready to remarry and I tried to explain this to her, but that didn’t stop her. Last week, she was on the phone talking to the HVAC technician and she invited him to our house for dinner. She said her mommy was okay if he came over to work on the furnace and stayed for dinner. Mommy told her it was okay to call him on the phone. I thought it was really sweet that she was inviting him for dinner, and I was laughing. I was laughing until he showed up two hours later and asked what was wrong with the furnace? I told him there was nothing wrong, since it was new, and he laughed. He said he thought there was something wrong with the phone call and apologized for not checking with me first. My dad came running out and gave the HVAC technician a hug. She told me she invited him to dinner for her and not for me, and told him we were having fried chicken and mashies because that was her favorite dinner. I invited him to stay.

I broke my glasses and I couldn't see the dial on the thermostat.

There is nothing worse than breaking your glasses and not seeing the dial on the thermostat.

My husband was constantly telling me we needed a digital thermostat, but I liked my old thermostat.

He worried because I was going blind and I often set my glasses down and couldn’t find them. He said if we got a digital thermostat, we could get a smart thermostat. We could go on the computer and adjust the temperature instead of worrying about trying to see the screen on the thermostat. I liked the idea, but I was stubborn. I didn’t like not being able to see, and I was vain enough to not admit it to anyone. When I dropped my glasses, I couldn’t see well enough to find them, and I ended up stepping on them. I had to call my husband and tell him it was getting cold in the house. I had tried to turn up the heat, but I must have been turning it down. I told him I stepped on my glasses and I couldn’t find my old ones. He said he would be home in less than an hour, but I didn’t know what time it was and I didn’t want him to leave work early. I made my way to my phone and dialed speed dial ‘1’, which was my neighbor. Two minutes later, she was at the house with me, and I had her call my husband back. She helped me find my old glasses and reset the thermostat for me. When my husband got home, he said the HVAC technician would be there the next day to install a new Smart Thermostat with large numerical readout, and he would put the program on his phone.

Why would anyone turn off the power in the winter?

Her daughter told me she had dementia and often forgets things

I got a phone call from my neighbor last week. She got home from shopping and the furnace wasn’t working. She had icicles hanging from her ceiling because of broken pipes. She said she wanted me to turn the furnace back on so she could get heat in the house and melt the ice. I worried about her not having heat, and I ran right over. I knew she couldn’t stay in the house with broken pipes, so I asked for her daughter’s phone number. I wanted to make sure she had some place to stay until the homeowner’s insurance adjuster arrived and got repairs done on the house. I got in touch with her daughter, who told me she would be right over. In the meantime, I was looking around the house, and I realized someone had turned off the power. I asked her if she had forgotten to pay the power bill, but she couldn’t remember. Her daughter showed up half an hour later, and I had left a note on the door for her to come to my house. She walked in and asked what happened. I said there was no power and without power; the furnace didn’t work and the pipes froze. She hugged her mom and asked if she was okay. My neighbor said she thought her husband had paid the bills, and I was confused. He died over four years ago. Her daughter told me she had dementia and often forgets things. It took three months to get the house repaired, and the furnace replaced, but she never moved back. Her daughter moved her in with her, where she didn’t need to worry about lack of heating, or forgetting to pay her bills.
