When we got sent home from the office I worked in at the outset of the pandemic, I was surprised. I guess I really didn’t understand the gravity of the virus and how serious the entire situation was. That is a tendency of mine. Seeing everything glass half full can end up fooling a person now and again. But I also have to admit that I wasn’t entirely upset about having to leave that office. Where we are, there just isn’t much winter weather and the heat pumps can take a break. But once the spring rolls around, the temperature start popping and the need for HVAC cooling grows. The problem was that the old office had some pretty old commercial HVAC equipment. And I was sort of glad to not have to face another summer sweating all day because the air conditioning couldn’t keep up with the temperatures outside. I got to work that summer in my own air conditioning and while it was better than the office, it still wasn’t all that great. I had taken over a storage room at the end of the house as my office. But it was hot out there. So I had the HVAC professionals install a ductless heat pump out there and wow, what a difference that made. I’ve never been more comfortable at work in my life. The benefits of working from home were privacy and good HVAC cooling. This resulted in the best job performance of my career. When the office reopened, the bosses had no problem with me working remotely and only coming in for mandatory meetings.

It’s been a heck of a two years for the planet with all the fallout, death and misery of the pandemic.

I’m very thankful that I was able to get through this ordeal with both my health and business in tact.

But like so many other people, I had stay cooped up inside the HVAC security of my home for a good, long while. And that made it even tougher to continue to grow my business. About 7 years ago, I left the zone controlled HVAC of the corporate offices one last time. I said goodbye to that steady company paycheck to go out on my own. With a handful of associates, we started a company that we hoped would be the answer for a lot of businesses. It turns out that it was. Initially, I rented office space inside a strip mall because is was affordable. The place had just the weakest commercial HVAC ever. It was cold in the winter to where just about everybody had to have a space heater under their desks. And the summer was even worse. The HVAC cooling was just almost non existent once we hit July and August. It was so hot that we had like 8 fans running to keep us at all cool. But when the pandemic hit, we all had to go home to our air conditioning and try to keep the ball rolling. To my utter astonishment, not only did we keep it rolling, we continued to grow. So once we were all vaccinated and ready to get back to the office, I leased new office space that included zone controlled HVAC!

I still can’t get over just how powerful those ductless heat pumps really are

There are days when I wake up and I still can’t believe our good fortune. After spending our entire lives in the city, my wife and I now wake up to the natural sound of a rural setting. And it’s amazing. The fact that we lived our lives inside apartments with radiant heating and not enough HVAC cooling only makes the contrast sweeter. We both figured that now was the time to go for it so we bought what was an old family farm about 90 minutes out of the city. We have a great main house that we renovated with the latest in residential HVAC and HVAC technology. It serves as both our home and now our offices. This is thanks, in part, to the pandemic. Prior to that we were making the commute two or three days a week to appease those in the zone controlled HVAC of the office. But once we both raised our game and delivered the best work of our lives working remotely, we don’t go into the office buy maybe once a month. The local HVAC professionals were integral in that happening. We have 3 out buildings on the property and we turned those into usable space. But one of them we wired for electricity and had the HVAC company install ductless heat pumps. That’s now our office space and the quality heating and air is amazing. I still can’t get over just how powerful those ductless heat pumps really are. And they are also just so efficient. Like I said, I’m still sort of pinching myself that all of this is really happening.

I don’t think anyone wants to come home to a house that they don’t want to be in.

There are plenty of reasons that happens.

And there are tons of people who simply hate going home at the end of the day also for a variety of reasons. I found myself to be staying inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office later and later as time went along. I just didn’t want to go home so staying late to work in the quality heating and air of the office was preferable. You know there is a problem if you’re choosing more work over going home. Thankfully, my problem with going home had nothing to do with my wife or kids. My relationship with my partner is the best and having kids feels like is sort of completed me as a person. So that wasn’t what was keeping me inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office. It was the wretched indoor air quality inside our home that made me want to stay away. We have 3 boys, gerbils, two dogs, two cats and I experiment in the kitchen all the time. So just take your pick when it comes to odors. After attempting to mask those odors for years, I finally decided it was time to talk with the HVAC professionals. They were great and we now have a whole home air purification system that has thrown a 180 on the indoor air quality in our home. Now, I can’t wait to walk in the door and feel the perfect air conditioning that is matched by the clean, crisp smell of the indoor air in my home.

When I took the promotion, I was pretty clear that this was a temporary thing.

I explained to the bosses that I’m a southern guy and wasn’t looking to make moving up north a permanent thing.

I was willing to deal with winters that required a gas furnace to help the company and further my career. But I wasn’t willing to do that forever. So we settled on a four year commitment. However, I got the job done in three. The regional office up north had been a mess for some time and while I knew that I could fix it, I sure wasn’t into HVAC heating for six months. I like being able to enjoy being outside all winter the way I do now and when I was here before. But being back after those four winters up north with the gas furnace cranking and the space heater under my desk just made it all the sweeter to be home. Honestly, I just don’t know how folks do it up north. I hated when I’d feel that first foreboding cold wind come up in October. That was always my que to call the HVAC company to get them out to do the HVAC heating maintenance. Then, it was just all I could do to hang on through the winter. I’m lucky to have purchased a home that had the latest in residential HVAC. My home was cozy warm and I wasn’t getting killed by the high cost of HVAC heating the way many folks were. But now, I’m home where the heat pump reigns supreme.

It’s funny how sometimes the smaller details can end up driving change and being the tipping point to committing to change.

That’s exactly what happened to me.

And I have the not so great quality heating and air of my old apartment to thank for that. When I got my first job out of college, I purposefully chose a less expensive apartment in order to save for a house. This was more important to me than a fancy car or an expensive rental condo downtown. Instead, I dealt with loud neighbors, weak HVAC cooling and cramped quarters in order to keep saving for a downpayment. But it’s just one of those things where the goal post kept moving the closer I got to them. This was so frustrating. I was putting in long hours inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office in order to get to the point where I could buy a house. Yet, I just couldn’t quite get there. It was so frustrating and I was so over the HVAC situation in my apartment that I decided to get creative. And that’s how I ended up pooling my money with 2 other people to buy a house. It’s a big place with 3 floors so we all have our own living space. Plus, when it came to replacing the central air conditioning, we chose to go with the ductless heat pumps. It was more affordable since the ductwork was shot as well. We also get to have our customized heating and cooling in each living space thanks to the ductless heat pumps.

So my wife and I decided to try something different this year.

• We have both been retired for a couple of years.

At first, being free from going to the same zone controlled HVAC of the office every day was amazing. We upgraded the HVAC equipment in our home to sell the place and made a bundle. Then, we traveled and followed all the passions that we had sort of put on the shelf as we went about our careers. However, we started to find that we both wanted to sink ourselves into a big project we could do together. Upgrading the HVAC and the other renovations we did to sell our old house really went surprisingly well and we took note of that. The fact was that our skills really blended well and we made a great renovations project team. That led us to taking a leap into buying a rental house. The place we bought was a small, 2 bedroom place that needed a lot of work but came at a great price. We jumped into the project with both feet and found that this was something we clearly liked to do. Finally, we scheduled the HVAC company to come out to replace the central air conditioning unit. But what we failed to realize was that the ductwork in that place was also shot. Thankfully, the HVAC contractor was able to pivot to ductless heat pumps and we got the place done on time. And actually, the ductless heat pumps are even better than that old central air conditioning. The tenant loves having them.

On a cold winter evening, I got a knock at my door.

I knew who would be there and so I went up and answered and sure enough there stood a young and handsome looking guy in a HVAC technician uniform. He greeted me and then said that he was here to fix the gas furnace. I let him into my home and then showed him the way to the gas furnace. As I started talking about all the issues I had been having with the gas furnace and how I really needed to get it working as quickly as possible because my house is getting very cold. I must have been wearing three different sweaters at the moment and had a blanket wrapped around me as well. I then pointed to my thermostat which had already dropped to 63 degrees. The HVAC technician noticed and said he’d be on it right away. I had just planned to go and sit down on my couch and have him tell me when he was finished but something kept me there. He started talking to me and asking me general questions about life, and making it a little bit of small talk as well. Normally I hate small talk, not because I don’t want to get to know anybody but because I crave for much deeper conversations than questions such as “how’s the weather?” There’s something specifically charming about the sky that made me want to stay. I’m glad I did because we really had a great conversation. By the end of the night he had fixed my gas furnace, we exchanged phone numbers and I had started dating a heating and cooling worker.

I was able to get somebody to come out that same day

Once again, I was having issues with my air conditioning system. I have been having on and off problems with the same AC system for quite some time now. I suspect that the culprit is old age because I have been taking good care of this air conditioning system the entire time. So when I walked into the house and immediately was hit by a major wave of heat I knew something was wrong once again. I was pretty unhappy with a healthy is so hot, because for one I wouldn’t be able to be comfortable now, and two this means that once again I was going to have to schedule an appointment with the heating and AC business so they could send out an HVAC technician to take a look at it and see what the problem was. I was wanting to get the HVAC technician as soon as possible. The way I saw it, the sooner I got somebody out here the sooner that it could be repaired. Well I was in luck, the heating and cooling business that I normally go with was in fact available and I had several openings. I was able to get somebody to come out that same day. When the heating and AC guy came out he gave me the bad news. He told me that my air conditioning system wasn’t going to last much longer and that I would need to start thinking about replacements, thankfully knowing the history of my AC I had already planned for something like this to save up for a new air conditioning system.

I love to cook, I really do, but there is only one problem and that is that every time I cook it really creates a lot of heat in my house.

I have never been the kind of person that likes a hot and heated home, as a matter of fact I am the first person to run my air conditioning system at the first sign of a little bit of too much heat.

My thermostat is always set to cooling, but all that changes the moment I turn on the oven or the stove. I have been looking up a lot of video tutorials online on how to make new meals. I have always loved trying to make new meals and my specialty is desserts. And I’m going to learn new skills. I might as well make sure it tastes good too! Started baking a brand new type of cake. I was going to try my hand at making a three layer cake but I had a hard time just getting through to the second layer. I was so hot and sweaty and I was seriously afraid of dripping sweat into the food! It was when my husband came in, drawn by the smell of a baking cake and he asked me what was wrong. I told him that I was making this delicious cake but I was having a hard time because I was so hot. So he came up with a great idea. He went and got the window air conditioning system that we had in the closet that I completely forgot about and he placed it right next to me and plugged in and turned it on. What a relief it was, amazing how much of a difference a simple window AC made for cooling down the entire kitchen. As soon as I started cooling down I was able to finish baking in no time.
