Being the current owner of a smart thermostat can be a studying experience and maybe even a little hard if you are older and are used to the old heating and A/C technology, this was the case for me… When I bought our current smart thermostat I had more than 2 concerns figuring the thing out.

And it was just recently that I discovered that a smart thermostat runs on respected batteries! I kept getting this warning message on the digital display that said battery was low, however I was trying to figure out what kind of battery I needed to buy for the smart thermostat. I could find no information whatsoever so I was actually starting to get a little nervous. This was when I decided to call the local heating and A/C company that I deal with to see if one of their certified heat and A/C specialists could tell me what I needed. They just laughed at me for the middle outdated chick that I am and simply told me that respected double A batteries from the store was all I needed! I really could not know it was that simple; no wonder I could find no information on it on the internet! I also thanked them for the information and explained that I am not young, and after that every one of us went to the store to buy the batteries for our smart thermostat. I finished making the old ones out and these with ease just appreciate a cable remote control. It worked that simple. I also had no more concerns.

As soon as I heard the clicking, I knew that something was wrong with my AC system.

I didn’t know where the clicking was coming from or how to begin looking for the issue, so I called the HVAC company to get an HVAC professional on the scene. When I explained the clicking noises over the phone, the man was very concerned as well. He agreed to come look at my AC system himself that afternoon. I was very impressed by his personal motivation to come out and help me, because I was desperate to get it fixed. When the HVAC professional arrived, he located the source of the clicking right away. The unusual noise was coming from the AC system’s fan. I would have never been able to locate this issue no matter how hard I tried. I was hoping that the fan would be repaired on the spot, but according to the HVAC professional, it needed to be replaced entirely. When I asked him how quickly it could be done, he gave me some disappointing news. Due to a lack of inventory, it would take up to two weeks to get the new fan in for my AC system. During this time, my AC would be out of commission and I’d have to find somewhere else to go if I wanted cool air. I was devastated by this news, but I was thankful to have it come in a matter of weeks. The HVAC professional said some homeowners were waiting months for new parts.

Even though I’m an adult and I own my own house, I love spending the night at my parent’s house. Whenever I say this to other people, they usually assume that I’m crazy. Nobody my age likes to be at their parent’s house for extended amounts of time. While I agree to some extent, I have a very specific reason why I like to stay there. When my parents renovated their basement, they added a guest bedroom and it became the place I stayed whenever I visited. It’s a simple room with a bed and a dresser and there’s nothing luxurious about it. There’s not even a bathroom in the renovated basement, which means that I have to walk all the way upstairs to get to it. You may be asking yourself why I’m so fond of it then. The answer is simple: the basement is much cooler than the rest of the house. Because the basement is cooler, I’m able to sleep peacefully and uninterrupted. I would never be able to cool my house to 65 degrees, especially in the summer. My utility bill would be outrageous! My parent’s basement however, is naturally 65 degrees and it feels wonderful. They did connect the central HVAC system to the basement, but it’s not needed during the summertime because the ground naturally lowers the temperature of the space. Because of this, my parents have closed all the air vents to keep cooler air from entering because it’s not worth adding more cool air.

It dawned on me after about the first six months of the pandemic that I really needed my own space.

Working from the air conditioning of my home was not as easy as I once thought.

I had always sort of looked down my nose at those in the company who chose to work remotely. I thought it was just a bunch of people who wanted to work in their pajamas and do the minimum. It was those of us that fought it out all day inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office that were the real backbone of the company. Such big ego talk always comes with a big dose of karma. I sure got mine when they shut down that office with the zone controlled HVAC due to Covid. Trying to work from home was utter chaos at the beginning. I’m just fortunate that this was the case for all of us when we started. Thankfully, I started to get the hang of the online meetings and was able to find a rhythm with my team. That was important and made working inside the air conditioning of my house a lot more structured. Still, I lacked privacy and space to really focus and lock down on the big challenges that I get paid well to consider. Then it just hit me. I got in my car one evening after I shut off the computer for the day and made my way to the place where they sell the prefab storage units with the windows and a porch. The ones that are pretty fancy but they just drop off in your back yard. That’s what I did and I had it wired for electricity as well. Then the HVAC company came out to install a ductless heat pump for air conditioning and heating comfort.

For sure, I always feel behind the curve when it comes to the latest in tech trends. Of course, you can’t just be anti technology these days or it makes it just so tough to live in this world. I mean, I couldn’t even do half my job inside the zone controlled HVAC of my office without knowing and accepting some technology. Stil, I don’t utilize the technology that I have in my life to the fullest right now. I’m the guy who knows how to text, make a phone call and play solitaire on the phone leaving 99 percent of the technology to waste. So I haven’t been super wild about adding more technology to my life. That said, I’m sure super pleased with all the HVAC technology that I just added to our home. The old HVAC unit finally ran to ground. She was done but not after more than two decades of flawless heating and cooling. And I mean flawless. We didn’t suffer one significant HVAC breakdown in all of that time. A lot of the credit for that goes to all the HVAC maintenance that thing got all its life. Still, that’s a pretty good run. However, when I started the replacement process, I found out quick that a lot had changed in HVAC technology since I put that last one in. For sure, the HVAC contractor helped us out there. We have the right amount of HVAC technology for the model of residential HVAC that we ended up investing in. It’s simply remarkable that this is the same house. The quality heating and air we get now is like nothing that I’ve ever experienced prior to having this HVAC equipment installed.

Our retirement dreams actually came true.

This certainly wasn’t the case for at least half of our friends back home.

We all come from a generation where if you worked hard and saved money, you got to retire and enjoy the good life. That’s all different these days as the best plans even got messed up with all the financial turmoil and changes. But when it was time for me to hang it up and leave the zone controlled HVAC of my office, I was ready. This was due, in large part, to my wife. She kept us on track when it came to our retirement plans. During the last few years inside that zone controlled HVAC of the office, my wife treated retirement preparation as though it were a full time job. We found the spot where we wanted to move. It was the south that was our destination and we were so pleased to trade a gas furnace for the heat pump of the south. The house she found was also perfect and came with a sunroom. Once we moved in, the sunroom was really great for much of the year and especially in the winter. But the summer out there was like an oven without air conditioning. So we changed that up after the first summer. The local HVAC company came out to install a ductless heat pump in the sunroom. It works like a charm now. We have all the HVAC cooling we need for the blistering summers down here. And the ductless heat pump also provides great HVAC heating for those chilly early morning in the winter.

Believe it or not but I’m a fully grown person and homeowner who never really has had a detailed household budget. My wife and I sort of just knew the parameters of our income and our expenses. But the pandemic kind of changed all that. First, we both got sent home from the zone controlled HVAC of the offices we worked in and had to work from home in our own air conditioning. Then came the pay cuts. They were deep that first year. But our expenses were much lower because we weren’t really doing anything outside the air conditioning safety of our home. Plus, we’d sort of pulled in the reins on spending in general once the pay cuts happened. Still, we took this opportunity to get much more reality when it came to our finances. And that started with a budget. This was not only an effort to save and get a good handle on our finances, it was a lot of discovery as well. For one, we were spending far more in air conditioning than we needed to. This was due to not paying enough attention to thermostat control and the fact that I had never once prepped the house. So this spring I made some changes to go along with the air conditioning tune-up from the HVAC professionals that happens each spring. I replaced all the weather stripping in the house and sealed up all the exterior gaps and cracks I could find. Then, I installed some great solar drapes to stop the direct sunlight heating on the side of the house that gets it all day. And I’ve finally learned how to program the digital thermostat for the peak heating hours of the day!

I promised my dad that I would come and help him get his house ready for the season this weekend.

I know that summer has already started, and the weather is really heating up now. However, I have not had any time to go out to help my dad at the lake house yet. This weekend is the first chance that I have had to be able to go out and help him get everything set up for the summer. Usually, by this time, we have forgotten everything up and running. I just really want to find this year because I have so much other stuff going on. I told my dad that we would get the air conditioning system checked out and maintained when I’m down there this weekend. Usually I do a maintenance check for him because I know my way around an HVAC system pretty well. He said that he thinks that there’s something wrong with the air conditioning system, and so this time I’m going to take all my tools down with me and see if I can’t figure out what the problem is. We will probably change the air filters and the batteries in the thermostat system and I will make sure that the air conditioning system is working the way that it is supposed to. I don’t want my dad to end up with a lot of high cooling bills to pay throughout the summer just because the central A/C in the lake house isn’t in good working order. I feel like it’s my job to make sure it’s in good shape.

I have taken off work tomorrow, and I think I’m going to spend my time going shopping for a new thermostat.

We have been needing to get a new thermostat for our house for a long time now, but I just keep on putting it off.

It’s one of those things that I know that we need to get, but I just never really want to take the time to go to the local hardware store and go through the process of picking out a new thermostat and having it installed. Our old thermostat is still working, but I don’t think it is doing exactly the job that it needs to be doing. The temperatures in our house are not being regulated as well as they once were, and I know that that is going to start affecting our heating and cooling bills before too long. I also have been reading a lot about smart thermostat units, and that’s the kind of thermostat that I want to get for the house. However, I don’t know as much about them as I should know, and so I want to go shop around and find an HVAC professional who can tell me more about them. I think that it will be nice to have a thermostat that can actually learn my family’s schedule and adjust the temperature in the house accordingly. Not only that, but smart thermostats can be controlled through an app on your smartphone and I love the idea of that. I hope that I can find exactly the one that I want tomorrow because I don’t want to waste an entire day off!
