He was a veteran when it came to all things cooling and air conditioning. He even managed to help manufacture several new air conditioning units. Mr. Harvey had become very successful and had trained so many cooling specialists. Just when he was a new contractor, Mr. Harvey, would upsell the new temperature control we had in the market back then. Through this, he was able to interact with the customer and build a good rapport with them. He continued honing his skills and six months after he joined, he was promoted to a cooling specialist. With this new role, he would go to offsite jobs including installing HVAC equipment such as the heat pump. He would also provide air conditioner tune-ups on residential and commercial systems. Mr. Harvey was liked by many and respected by all. He would develop training manuals for the recruits. For the longest time, my boss had always attended this convention but this year I was surprised that he humbly requested that I represent him. I was excited because it was a break from my town. I was excited to walk around the new town and get acquainted with their food, considering I am a foodie. And the prices these people were bandying about were amazing. Yet, I was sort of shocked when the first realtor told us we would need to upgrade our HVAC equipment. That was not really something that we had figured on needing to upgrade. The HVAC unit we had was the best in residential HVAC when we bought it just over 12 years ago. The HVAC unit had received all the necessary HVAC maintenance twice a year without fail as well. So that HVAC equipment was actually in really good shape and we weren’t all that interested in getting rid of it. I communicated this to the realtor and he pushed back really hard. Like so hard that we decided that, while he had great results, maybe he wasn’t the guy for us. So we contacted another real estate pro who had come highly recommended to us. She was much more even and less tightly wound than the first guy. And yet, she too suggested that we upgrade the HVAC equipment. However, she did so while providing us with the relevant data that showed us what a big difference the HVAC upgrade would make. Getting the latest in HVAC technology would increase the price of the house in such a way that we would have been sort of stupid to do anything else.

When I came home early on a Friday super eager to start the weekend, I was not anticipating there would be no HVAC cooling in my home.

But that’s exactly what I found. I walked in and it was immediately apparent that the air conditioning wasn’t working. However, the HVAC equipment was running. And it seemed as though it was running just like it always did. There were no weird sounds or anything like that. The only thing that was way off was the inside temperature on the thermostat. Perhaps the fact that the HVAC unit was actually running is what made me decide that maybe I was the one to fix the situation. Somehow, my brain told me that I could find the answer on the internet. So I started looking and quickly convinced myself that all I needed was a recharge kit. Of course, I have zero training when it comes to HVAC so making a diagnosis was truly a shot in the dark. But having seen some videos online, I was just sure that I could figure it all out. Yet, that’s not at all what happened. I tried to do the recharge thing and it all ended up blowing up in my face. The refrigerant level wasn’t the problem at all. So I ended up rupturing the compressor and some other stuff. Finally, I called the HVAC company. It took a few hours and a lot of money to fix the situation. Had I called the HVAC professionals from the beginning, it would have been a ten minute fix and cost me just about nothing.
