Of course, I thought I had Covid.

This past winter, I came down with what I would have assumed was a head and chest cold had it not been for the ongoing pandemic. But I had a slight temperature and some other symptoms that could have been Covid. While I was vaccinated and had stayed inside the air conditioning safety of home to be careful, I had to be sure what I was dealing with. Thankfully, the test came back negative and I had a huge sigh of relief that it wasn’t this awful virus. But that cold just kept going. I felt better after a week or so but the respiratory symptoms were just sticking with me. So I finally made an appointment to see the doctor. I hate sitting in the waiting room that has the HVAC cooling on full blast no matter the season it seems. And I know that this is to prevent infectious transmission and bacterial growth. But it’s super uncomfortable. Still, I had to do it because the effects of the cold had lingered into nearly 2 months. I just wanted to get whatever prescription I needed to take to get rid of the whole thing finally. What I came away with was a prescription to call my HVAC company. That was a bit of a surprise to me indeed. But my doctor thought the indoor air quality of my home was the real culprit of my lingering respiratory issues. She was right because as soon as the HVAC professionals came out to do the ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing, I got better immediately.

This is something I wanted since I was a little kid. I grew up in apartments. And most of them had radiant heating and a window air conditioner for HVAC equipment. That was fine and I have to say that I’m thankful to have had decent heating and cooling growing up. My mom did the best she could to raise 3 kids alone in the city. Apartment living was her only option. As much as I loved my mom and my siblings growing up, those apartments just never felt like home. So I promised my self that I’d study hard, get into a good college and have a real house one day. That was the plan and that’s pretty much what happened. I lived in the dorm all four years of college to save money. And I had that radiant heating in my dorm room. Then, I graduated and I did get a great job and got married not too long after. After some more apartment living while we saved for a downpayment, I finally got the house I wanted. It’s been 12 years of homeownership for me now. And I have to say that the heat pump is by far the appliance that I’m most impressed with. The HVAC contractor helped me pick out a great residential HVAC unit that was both really efficient and extremely reliable. Both of those were priorities for me. I’ve been sure to get the HVAC unit the seasonal HVAC maintenance it needs and it’s repaid me with nothing but quality heating and air.

When we retired down south, the heat and humidity weren’t exactly a shock. We knew for sure that June through September came with a lot of heat. But there is a difference between knowing something as a fact and experiencing it. So the first few summers, we just poured on the HVAC cooling. It was really all that we felt we could do in order to manage this sort of heat and humidity. However, all that air conditioning doesn’t come cheap. While I was glad to be free of the HVAC heating costs once we moved down here, I was running up big HVAC cooling bills now. And that seemed pretty counter intuitive to me. The HVAC heating up north where we lived and raised a family was essential to survival. While we tried to cut costs and prepare the house in order to save on HVAC heating costs, you simply had to have it. Well, that’s true down here but to a lesser degree. Of course, through the summer down here without air conditioning would be foolish and could prove to be quite dangerous as well. But, we were using so much HVAC cooling that we weren’t adjusting to the heat at all. So this year, we’re changing that behavior. We didn’t go right for the thermostat to flip to air conditioning once the temperatures started rising this spring. And we’re going to keep the inside only 15 degrees cooler than the outside throughout the summer. This will keep the HVAC cooling costs down significantly while allowing us to truly acclimate to our new environment.

My wife and I are enjoying the incredible quality heating and air of our new home. There are times where we sit inside the air conditioning and just sort of reflect on the whole process of building our new house. We chose to build a house sort of late in life. Initially, I think the plan was that we’d live in the family home we raised our kids in until we retired. At least that was the plan. But once the house was empty, we realized that it was an awful lot of house for just two people to try and take care of. Just the heating and cooling costs alone were so not sustainable. The tipping point came when replacing the HVAC equipment coincided with the white hot real estate market in our region. Since we were replacing the HVAC unit, we thought why not just do a few more things and cash in on the prices we were seeing house sold for. Once that was done, we had another sort of epiphany when we realized that staying in this region was what we wanted to do. Originally, we thought we’d leave behind four season for all that HVAC cooling way down south. But we really like this region so building a house seemed like just the right thing to do. One key element of our house was the geothermal heat pump that we wanted to have. So it took some time for us to find the right HVAC contractor we could trust to get this thing done. It took us months to find the right HVAC professional but it sure was worth the effort as we simply love the quality heating and air in our home.

When I was growing up, we didn’t have a whole lot but we also never went without whatever we needed.

Our lives were quite simple and I still give thanks that our parents chose to raise us this way. I’m sure they took a lot of heat from some of their peers. We lived very simply and that was often looked down upon. Like our house didn’t have modern HVAC technology at all. We had an awesome wood stove that took care of all the heating we would ever need. And we lived on 50 something acres so there was plenty of firewood to keep that heating going. As for air conditioning, we had the cool breezes and fans when it got hot in the summer. But you know, I never gave it any thought. I loved the way I was raised and it’s rubbed off on me in a myriad of ways. The home I own with my wife does have residential HVAC and I love the quality heating and air it provides. However, much like my parents, I’m always very keen to take care of whatever takes care of me. And the HVAC equipment is certainly no exception to that. Along with seasonal HVAC maintenance provided by our HVAC service plan, I have responsibilities of my own. The most important of which is making sure the HVAC air filter is changed once per month. Just keeping a clean air filter helps the HVAC unit be both efficient and not work too much. That allows for greater longevity from the HVAC equipment.

It wasn’t something that I had really wanted to do but there really wasn’t all that many other viable solutions.

So hitting the road during the pandemic was what had to happen, so I did it. Initially, I closed our offices with the zone controlled HVAC out of an abundance of caution. But soon, it was quite clear to me that we wouldn’t be going back for a long time. The transition to working remotely from our own HVAC at home wasn’t all that bad. My company has about 30 people in it so we’re all a very tight group and work well with each other. Had that not been the case, I think I could have very well lost my company during the global health crisis that won’t quit. So it ended up with me and three others getting out to our customers via the highway. I took the major accounts and headed there first. Once I hit the road that summer, I cranked the air conditioning in the car. This was not something that I could have done on a plane so I took advantage of having all that HVAC cooling while traveling. Since the clients I needed to see were pretty spaced out, I had to be out on the road for a good chunk of time. Normally, we fly in for a few days and stay at a downtown hotel. But since I was driving, I took advantage of going to the mid tier hotels just off the interstate. And wow, I was so impressed. Not only were the neat, clean and affordable, they had the most consistently good quality heating and air I’ve ever seen.

I’m still waiting for the day that I can return home to the south and all that air conditioning. I swear that when that happens, I’ll never complain about the heat and the need for a lot of HVAC cooling. Initially, we moved up here on a five year commitment for my wife’s job. I’m in IT and work remotely so I really didn’t have much ammunition when it came to trying to not move north. Plus, I really want my wife to succeed in what she loves to do. That’s really important to me and so I’ve done my best to get accustomed to living in the north with all this HVAC heating. However, my wife’s parents don’t live far from where we are and that is also a factor. As they age, it doesn’t look as though they are as willing to leave behind the gas furnace for the heat pumps down south. That was the plan. My wife wanted them to retire to be close to us so she could look after them. But that seems less and less likely. So that five year commitment came and went. I spoke up about it and we had a conversation. However, I knew when I was having it that we’d be staying inside the HVAC heating from the gas furnace indefinitely. I think it’s going to take one or both of my wife’s parents to pass before we’ll ever be heading back to the HVAC cooling that I miss. Yet, I will say that I’m so very thankful when it comes to having a great gas furnace that has kept me warm in a region that is known for deep cold.

I’m very much a live and let live sort of guy.

The idea that I have it all wired and everybody else needs to follow me is not even in my head.

For one, I’m really just a simple guy who’s doing his best to get along in this world. However, there are a few things I’ve learned that seem to be really important. I know it’s not exactly earth shaking but HVAC maintenance is one of those really important things. I’m sort of a preventive maintenance sort of guy anyway. But the HVAC equipment in my home is just so essential to the heating and cooling comfort of my family that it goes right to the top of essentials. I have buddies of mine who tend to believe that HVAC maintenance is nothing but a waste of money. Of course this belief is fueled by their wishes not to spend money for quality heating and air. Plus, it’s just an outdated and wrong argument. I hear some of these guys say that all HVAC equipment is built so tough that they don’t need seasonal maintenance from HVAC professionals. However, that is clearly not what the data reflects however. Fact is, the heating and cooling equipment that gets regular HVAC maintenance lasts about 7 years longer than those that don’t get HVAC maintenance. Then throw in all the times they have to call for HVAC repair and the picture gets even more clear when it comes to the importance of HVAC maintenance. I’ve had my HVAC unit for going on 20 years. Every fall and every spring there is an HVAC maintenance appointment. And so far, I’ve never had to call for any sort of HVAC repair.

Things didn’t go my way when I went to college.

I absolutely just wanted to go to a local community college at first, but my parents pushed me to go to something nicer in their minds.

I got into this college they wanted me to attend, but I didn’t get along with most of the students there. I felt like an outcast as well as like I didn’t belong at this school. Things weren’t even like that for me when I was in school, it was simple to make friends. I tried to push myself to just get by since I realized it wasn’t all about the social experience, but reading what I needed to learn in order to get a enjoyable career. I worked at it for awhile, but I couldn’t take it anymore after a few fights with my roommate in the dorms. I finally decided to drop college as I was struggling rather badly anyway. I never was able to get enjoyable sleep because the room was consistently feeling overheated. Even when I purchased a portable AC unit, somebody reported me saying that I was not permitted to bring portable Heating as well as A/C units in the dorms which I thought was ridiculous. I swore all these people were out to make my life irritated. My parents were exasperated when I dropped out, but I ended up going to an Heating as well as A/C trade school, as well as this school was more to my liking.
