Troubleshooting the heat pump settings

During the Winter time season, your control unit ensures your heat pump generates enough heat to keep your cabin sizzling plus cozy; then instead of generating heat with a burner flame, your heat pump extracts heat energy from the air outside… But heat pumps concentrate this air plus circulate it throughout your home, then to maintain your desired indoor temperature settings, your heat pump may also switch between several settings during the Winter time season.

The control unit may switch your heat pump to auxiliary heat or emergency heat based on the outdoor temperature! When the outside temperature is cold – around 30 or 40 degrees Fahrenheit – your control unit will activate auxiliary heat.

When the temperature drops below freezing, your heat pump won’t be able to pull enough heat from the air in time, and auxiliary heat activates the heat strips in your indoor unit, which are your unit’s hourary heat source! Similar to auxiliary heat, emergency heat is also manually switched to this setting plus then turned off the same way. This opening is only applicable if your outdoor unit is incapable of generating the needed heat due to a faulty component or a malfunctioning system; but either way, you’ll need to have it checked by a professional in heating plus air conditioner repair because this setting makes the heat strips the sole source of your house’s heat while the rest of your heat pump is disabled. When hot plus cold temperatures drop, the automatic setting should be auxiliary heat, but your heat pump will only activate this if it cannot extract enough heat to keep the indoor temperature comfortable while minimizing demand on its hourary heating strips or electric heating coils. If emergency mode is also activated, the heat pump function will not be used; your system will instead rely on its hourary heating strips/electric heating coils. Your utility bills will be higher because these consume more excess energy.

Heat Pump Settings

During the winter season, your thermostat ensures your heat pump generates enough heat to keep your house warm and cozy.

The farmer requested a quote for 5 large barns and a hen house

Saturday afternoon, I plan to drive out to the country to give a customer a quote for adding ventilation fans to all of the buildings on the property.

The farmer requested a quote for five large barns and a hen house.

The job on the property is going to be at least $10,000. I don’t have an exact quote for the customer, but the square footage is very high and that will require industrial-sized ventilation fans. I’m sure the farmer knows the job won’t be cheap, because he mentioned some brands to me and none of them are cheap. Most of the ventilation fans are made by companies that primarily deal with farm equipment. I don’t have any other job scheduled for Saturday, so I can spend several hours looking at all of the buildings. I’d like to detail a plan so I can give the farmer an estimate a day or two after I finish looking at the property. I have a lot of time coming up next month and I think that the farming job would be perfect to fill in the time. I have a couple of contractors that are good with heights and working on ladders. If I can get a large crew together, we can tackle the job in a couple of days. If I go there with a couple of guys, it might take us a week or two. It depends on what the farmer wants and how much money he is willing to spend in order to get the job done efficiently and quickly.

a/c tune up

In the middle of the month, I have no money

I had to replace my HVAC unit last month and now I am totally broke.

I didn’t have $6500 to spend on the new machine, so I had to get a loan from the finance lender down the street. The place is good for people with less than perfect credit, but they charge a huge interest rate. My payments each month are $215 and right now my monthly income is only two thousand dollars each month. My wife was working until recently. She was the person earning the most money as a nurse. When she got into the accident, she tweaked her back and neck. Most days, she can barely sit still and lay down. She is in constant pain. When the problems with the HVAC unit occurred, I knew we were going to be in trouble financially. The bank wouldn’t give us a loan, because my wife can’t work anymore. We were in quite a pickle and had to take the deal from the company down the street with crazy high interest rates. Now all I can do in the middle of the month is hope and pray that we have enough money to get through. I get paid on the fifteenth and that day is when the payment for the HVAC is due. I can’t be late or the fees are outrageous. If the car breaks down or something else in the house needs to be repaired, we are totally doomed.. It’s hard to pay for milk, bread, and laundry soap. I can’t add car repairs to that list. I honestly don’t know what we will do if things don’t improve soon.

After the tune-up, the machine seemed to run much better

It seems like there were places inside of the house where the temperatures were colder than others.

I mentioned the problem to my husband and he suggested calling the local AC repair company to have a service check performed on the machine.

I saw it. It sounded like a great idea. I contacted the same people that installed our machine. It had been about two years since they came to put the equipment in our home. Since that time, we had not gotten any service on the machine. My husband performed a couple of routine cleanings, but we did not pay for anyone to service the system. The HVAC technician assigned to help us knew that we did not have any services performed on the machine. He could tell by the way that the system looked. He didn’t say anything too mean or nasty, but he did warn us that the longevity of the machine is determined by the care that the machine is given. After a complete tune-up on the air conditioner, I noticed a lot of changes in the indoor air. One of the biggest changes was the temperatures throughout the house. They seemed more even and colder. We suddenly started to shiver when the thermostat said 72. I can’t even remember the last time it was 72 degrees in the house. The thermostat hardly ever reaches that temperature. After the tune-up, it’s clear that the machine is running much better. It is a service that my husband and I will continue to have performed year after year.

Both times I turned on the ductless AC, the power blew to the house

After the storm last week, I tried to turn on the ductless AC in the garage and the power blew.

The power to the whole house went out when I turned on the ductless AC.

I thought it was a fluke, so I turned on the power and tried it again. This time the breaker to the ductless AC went bad. I could not turn on the power again. I tried a couple of different solutions to fix the problem, but eventually I gave up and contacted the repair service the next day. Bobby came to the house to look at the ductless AC, he was one of the two guys that installed the machine last summer. I don’t remember the name of the other guy, but I have seen Bobby more than once since the machine was installed. The other guy might not even work for the company anymore. When Bobby arrived to look at the machine, he asked a couple of questions. I told the guy that the problems had been occurring since the storm. He used a multimeter to check the voltage of the machine and all of the electrical components in the box. After a while, the service technician determined that the problem was actually an issue at the street. He suggested that I contacted the electrical company. I had to wait an additional three days for the electric company to check on the problem at the street. It turns out that the repair technician was correct. I’m certainly glad that he didn’t charge me for an expensive repair that I did not need.

I thought the pool heater was going to work this time

I bought a special heater for the pool at the rental house.

I hooked up the heater and I thought it was going to work.

I must have done something incorrectly, because after three days, the pool water still wasn’t warm. I was determined to fix the heating problem on my own, because the cost of a pool heating contractor is extremely high. It is a specialty area and those guys charge an arm and a leg for services. I troubleshooted the problem and I thought it was a wiring issue. I went to the hardware store to find the right parts to fix the problem with the heater. I went to three different hardware stores before I found the parts in stock. I was starting to lose my mind. I was worried that I was going to need to drive all the way to the city in order to find the part for the pool heater. I got the wiring that was necessary and everything seems to be correct. I crossed my fingers that second time I tried to heat the pool. The machine came on and started to hum and per. It sounded much different than the machine sounded when the heater wasn’t working. I was trying to be very patient, but I decided to check the pool a couple of hours later before I went to bed. I didn’t feel any temperature shift in the water and I started to feel very sad and depressed. In the morning when I woke up, I made a cup of coffee and I went outside to check on the pool. This time the water was definitely warmer than the temperature of the air outside.

The insurance company made me jump through hoops

A couple of months after my wife and I bought our house, we had to contact the insurance company with a claim.

There was a massive tropical storm in the area and a tree fell in the backyard and took out the HVAC unit.

It was crushed like an accordion. The damage to the heating and cooling system was severe. We got an estimate from the dealership for a new machine. At that time, the dealership told us that we should contact the insurance company. They believed that the damages would be covered under our claim due to the fact that the tropical storm affected our entire county. With a severe weather emergency declared in the state, the insurance company should have been forced to pay for the new HVAC equipment. My wife and I had to jump through hoops to get the company to cover our loss. They wanted paperwork from the local weather service as well as paperwork from the mayor of the city. They wanted separate quotes from several different company providers and proof that I didn’t cause the damage before the storm began. It took three months before they paid for the claim. Thank goodness I had enough money to pay for the new machine without the insurance company, because 3 months would have been a very long time to wait for the insurance company to buy a new one. I would have gone most of the summer and half of the fall season without being able to use the climate control system. I wasn’t about to do that.

The waiter offered us cold drinks while we waited

I never turn down a free drink or appetizer, especially when someone at a restaurant offers those items for free.

My girlfriend and I went to a restaurant last Friday night after work was over.

The restaurant is a place that we have been to on several different occasions. We know several of the waiters and waitresses by their first names. Some of them recognize us as well. That night the place was very busy. We waited outside for 15 minutes before our reservation was ready. Even after we were seated, we waited another 15 minutes before our waiter arrived. The guy apologized for the long wait and offered to bring us some beverages from the bar. He told my girlfriend and I that the AC in the kitchen broke down and the guys were having trouble getting all of the orders out on time because of the problem. I absolutely understood, because I worked in a kitchen when I was in college. There were often times when the AC didn’t work and the boss expected us to work anyway. We ran around feeling tired and lethargic and it was difficult to concentrate. The waiter offered us cold drinks while we waited for our items to arrive and he apologized three or four times for the issues with the air conditioner and the kitchen staff. Even though it took a while for us to receive our food, everything was hot and fresh and tasted great. We honestly didn’t mind waiting as long as we got quality food when the order finally arrived.

I didn't want the kids to come home to a cold house

I really didn’t expect the kids to have school last week when it snowed overnight.

  • Most of the time, the school will close down so the kids don’t have to stand outside in the cold air and wait for the bus.

When there is ice and snow on the ground, the temperatures are usually in the single digits. That means the temperatures are extraordinarily cold for our children to stand outside. Many of us work in the city and can’t sit with our children while they wait for the bus. There was no 2-hour delay on Wednesday, even though there was 8 inches of snow on the ground. The bus picked up the kids and I sat with them at the bus stop, because I didn’t have to go to work that day. My office canceled work, but the kids had to go to school. After I got back to the house from the bus stop, I adjusted the temperature on the thermostat. It felt very cold in the house, despite the fact that the thermostat was set to 72°. I turned it up to 74 and I thought the house would get warmer in a couple of hours. Unfortunately, the house did not get warmer. I realized that the air coming out of the vents was lukewarm. I didn’t want the kids to come home to a cold house, so I immediately contacted a heating company in town. I called the same service provider that installed the furnace a couple of years ago. They didn’t have a service technician available in the morning, but they promised to send someone as quickly as possible.
