Air Conditioning Price Updates

Had someone told me I needed to measure my window before buying an air conditioning unit, I wouldn’t be in the mess I was in.

I walked into the store and told them I needed a window air conditioning unit for my bedroom.

No one said they had different sizes or that they were different BTUs. I knew how big my bedroom was and gave him the dimensions. He quickly figured out many BTUs I needed and pointed out several air conditioning units that work for my bedroom. One looked huge, and I was afraid it would be too big for me to lift and install. I wasn’t petite, but I wasn’t a monster like some men I knew. I looked at the smaller one and although it had the same BTU on the label, it weighed a mere fifty pounds. I hefted the AC unit and knew it was the right one for me. The man didn’t tell me it had to be blocked on both sides and that there was nothing to fan out and create a tight fit. I got the AC unit home, opened up the box, and took it into my bedroom. I had it seated in the window and the window was down, but I had four inches of open air space on both sides of the window. Now, what was I going to do? The directions said to build a box for the air conditioning unit. It was made to go in the wall and not in a window. I called my brother and told him I needed help, because I wasn’t going back for another air conditioning unit.

Normally, this is the part of the year that I spend soaking up every moment I can inside the sunroom. We are just weeks away from the beginning of the Summer heat season and that changes my life a bit. Living down south is just where I want to be and much of that is due to the weather. But it also comes with a whole lot of air conditioning during the Summer months. I have an inflammatory condition that doesn’t allow me to move the way I once did. I’m thankful to be able to manage it with meds and a good diet. But I just can’t get outside any day that I want any longer. That’s why I’m so fond of having this sunroom. When it became clear that I’d have good days and bad days that would limit what I like to do outside, my husband had the sunroom put on. It really did help me transition to a life where I don’t get out as much as I once did. On the tough days, I enjoy sitting in the sunroom because it almost feels like I’m outside. But once the Summer gets here, I would have to move back into the central air conditioning. The sunroom just got too hot to enjoy being out there from June through September. Then, my wonderful husband had the HVAC professionals come out here to install a ductless heat pump inside the sunroom. The ductless heat pump is amazing. I can’t believe that something so small is producing the sort of cooling comfort that I get. This Summer, I can keep staying outside thanks to good air conditioning inside my sunroom.

I sort of hate the beginning of Summer and it’s literally now just weeks away.

But those four months of big time heat and humidity are part of the price you pay to live here.

I’ve had the HVAC professionals out to the house to do the air conditioning tune up. And my wife and I spent a couple of weekend afternoons putting a good seal on the house. So we’re ready. And as much as I don’t like the heat and all the air conditioning costs, the beginning of Summer does kick off the countdown to vacation. We have always taken two weeks at the end of Summer for family vacation. Now, the kids are grown mostly and we even have a new daughter in law. Still, we all gather at the same small beach town to enjoy the end of Summer family vacation. Now that the kids are grown, we choose to rent an entire house for the two weeks. This just makes more sense from just about every angle. There’s more room, we can make ourselves at home and there is always great air conditioning. There is nothing worse than being on vacation in some hotel room with commercial HVAC equipment that isn’t getting the job done. So that’s another reason we enjoy the house rental for vacation. I love the fact that there is a smart thermostat and zone controlled HVAC in the place we’ve been staying the last couple of years. Having a thermostat in our bedroom is such a treat for my wife and I. That’s because at home, we are cooling misers in order to keep the air conditioning costs down.

I hate having to go to the laundromat.

Back when I lived at my old apartment, we weren’t allowed to have washers and dryers inside of our units.

And there was only one washer and dryer on each floor, and I could never get a load in even if I tried. So more often than not I didn’t have a choice and could only take my laundry to the laundromat. And the laundromat was extremely expensive, even back then. A large load of clothes takes 5 to $7 to wash just in the washing machine nowadays. And that’s not even considering the cost to dry it. One of the most important things about the house I’m renting right now is the clothes washer and dryer. I don’t have to take my laundry to the laundromat knowing that I have both of these appliances in my laundry room. However the dryer stopped working the other day and I couldn’t get a hold of my landlord. He eventually told me he would try to buy a new one, but it would take a week to get it replaced. To avoid going to the laundromat, I decided to try to fix the clothes dryer myself. I figured out that it wasn’t heating the clothes properly. There was an issue with the thermal fuse that determines how much heat the clothes dryer needs while it runs. The form of thermal fuse prevents the clothes dryer from overheating during normal use. It was a $30 part and I replaced it myself. Now the clothes dryer is heating up again properly like it’s supposed to.

I’m really lucky to have a nice neighbor next to my house.

Unlike some neighbors I’ve had in the past, my current neighbor is a really nice guy.

When I first moved into this house, he invited me over for a barbecue the first week. He even wanted me to come watch a football game with him while drinking craft beer. Needless to say, we immediately hit it off as close friends. I feel like he’s somebody that I can confide in if I’m having issues with my marriage. I can tell him about an argument I had with my wife and he doesn’t judge either one of us. My wife thinks he’s a good guy too. He’s also watching over her house when we’re not here to make sure that things are the way they’re supposed to be. Recently he alerted us to a problem that we were even remotely aware of. Apparently there was a noise developing in our HVAC condenser unit outside. He said he started to hear a little hum develop over the course of several weeks and then while we were on vacation it started to rattle. That’s when we called the heating and cooling company and gave them permission to work on the HVAC system while we were gone. Thanks to our neighbor, they were able to find the problem with the compressor before it burned itself out. That meant the repair was a lot easier to do and it didn’t require replacing the entire compressor. We’ve had that happen before and it’s a lot of money if you’re not under warranty.

I think I can get in there next week and then I am going to focus on my teeth and getting them cleaned and fixed up a bit

I may go to the doc’s office next week and see if they can shoot this tennis elbow pain with some cortisone so I can be done with the pain for good. I haven’t had a shot in that elbow for twenty years and can do two more if I need it, and right now I need it. The last time I went in the office they looked at it and shrugged it off as something temporary, which was three years ago and it still hurts. I will explain to them that the pain is not going away with cooling and heating cycles like they told me to try back then. I used ice on it and then a heating pad many times but the pain is still there and seems to be getting worse. I put some cooling gel on it this morning and it helps a bit but I really need the local business to give me a shot of cortisone so that I don’t have to mess with it anymore. I think I can get in there next week and then I am going to focus on my teeth and getting them cleaned and fixed up a bit. The local contractor near me had the same tooth issues and got them fixed at this local business and he told me they did a great job of whitening them, which is something I need to get done as it has been years since getting them cleaned and whitened. I will work at the HVAC company this coming week and work on that appointment.

Today is Saturday and I am a bit sore from playing sports last night, but I did have a lot of fun so I have to weigh that into the equation of my pain. Sometimes you need to expect some pain when you have a lot of pleasure like we did last night playing ball in the sand with music and a bunch of friends. Tonight I switch gears and will play drums and sing with my bandmate, possibly with a 3rd musician but we aren’t sure yet if he will join us. We met this guy at the heating corp last year and now he is back from his trip home and will be here working at the HVAC business and maybe playing with us. I think we are going to play in this spot by the church with really good acoustics so that we can play without a sound system, as the cops keep stopping us from singing in the streets with amplified sound, oh no! The heating and cooling system by the church is located on the opposite side we will be playing on, so the noise from it won’t be an issue while playing our songs. We also have a really good view of the sea from that spot and will play there as long as the money keeps rolling in. We make decent money in tips and it pays for new furnace filters and HEPA filters for my robot vacuum cleaner. There is a nearby town where we can make more money and we may go there tomorrow.

I almost missed out on one of the better deals a homeowner around here can get. But I tend to immediately tune out people who are trying to get me to spend cash on something else. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been resting in line inside the commercial Heating & A/C of some company with somebody trying to upsell me. It’s near constant really. And it’s not like I can blast the person doing it because they’re doing as instructed! So I guess I just developed a sort of default tune out as soon as a salesperson starts talking upsell. That’s just what happened a few months ago when I called our local Heating & A/C dealer. When I genuinely remember, I call in the Springtime to get the cooling system tune up done on the heat pump prior to Summer. It gets wicked sizzling & humid around here so going into the Summer with a inspected heat pump is optimal. After I made the appointment for the Heating & A/C maintenance, the lady on the other end asked me if I’d heard about the Heating & A/C maintenance plan, but of course, I tried to move on & get off the phone, it’s a superb thing that I listened instead. It was clear that this lady wasn’t trying to sell me something as much as she was trying to help me out. She explained that as part of the Heating & A/C maintenance plan, I don’t have to remember to call for Heating & A/C maintenance. On top of that, if I encountered any sort of heating & cooling maintenance while a part of the Heating & A/C maintenance plan, all I had to pay for was parts. I mean, this was a no brainer for sure. I genuinely signed up for the Heating & A/C maintenance plan on the spot.

According to a rule laid about by the HOA in our planned community, homeowners need to keep the Heating plus Air Conditioning device from view, but all residential Heating plus Air Conditioning has to be screened from street level view or be in the back of a fenced in yard, but why? This is what I’ve been asking myself for the past couple of months as I try to help my friend deal with an obstinate HOA board! I just can’t seem to get an answer as to why our heating plus cooling device has to be hidden from view.

I mean, my buddy and I live in the south so it’s no secret that my buddy and I all rely on A/C.

And while our winter time weather is quite mild, some heating from the heat pump sure does come in handy at times, then but this Heating plus Air Conditioning device has to be hidden from view plus I’m stumped; My neighbors are older plus they use a shrubbery maintenance to take care of their property. It’s usually quite fantastic however this Spring, the shrubbery crew break back a privacy hedge that was screening the Heating plus Air Conditioning equipment. And they break it back a bit too short. It didn’t take 24 hours before these poor folks were being threatened with fines from the HOA, however that was almost two months ago plus the issue is almost moot now that the hedge has new growth. But instead of being logical or sufficient, the HOA wants to force these people to pay. And as a lawyer, that makes me crazy. I told my neighbors not to pay a dime plus that I’d be their advocate. There is a public HOA meeting next week plus those HOA board members are going to get an earful.
