Eve was in a hurry to get to her son’s school, but she was running late. It seemed there was a bad accident on the road, and this caused so much traffic. So, she was forced to call the school and explain why she’d be late. Her son’s teacher got the news and went to fetch him from the pick up area. He explained that mom was running later, so they’d stay in class and do some coloring. Eve loves her son’s teacher because he is so engaging with his students. He’d managed to explain the situation in a wonderful way, and her son was busy coloring when Eve finally arrived at school. It was Friday, so the next day was Saturday and they were both at home. Eve wanted to go to the store to buy groceries, but she’d do that later. She had to wait for a heating and AC expert to come by and do some maintenance. It was spring, and soon they’d be facing the high summer temperatures. Eve wanted to make sure her cooling system was in the best condition. The days were getting warmer, so she’d soon need to turn the unit on. As the heating and AC expert was working, her son followed him around asking all sorts of questions. He was so patient with him and gave him an answer to each question. The guy reminded Eve of her son’s teacher. In 2020, I joined TikTok and started to do dance tutorials.

It was all for fun since there was nothing much to do at home. At the time, I had been fired from my job, and tried to do freelance writing. While scrolling the phone one day I started to see TikTok viral videos of simple dances. I tried and posted my videos as well, and they did well. I followed this with hair and beauty tutorials which is something I’ve always loved. Little did I know this simple thing would change my life. People loved the content, and I later started getting brand deals. Then, the money came, and a change of life. I had been living in a small apartment, and suddenly I could afford a house. So, I wasted no time in finding one in this location I had been eyeing for a long time. A realtor helped me with the purchase, and I quickly moved in. That summer, I had to use the AC since it was getting warmer and warmer. However, when I tried using the unit, it failed after a little while. Since I know nothing about HVAC systems, I contacted a HVAC company for assistance. They sent an HVAC tech to my home and he did an inspection. The unit was okay so he suspected the thermostat was in the wrong position. His hunch was right since I didn’t experience any other issues after he relocated my thermostat. It seems the person who’d installed it before didn’t place it in the right place.

My five-year interior decor job exposed me to many more careers than I’d expected when I started. From having contact with plumbers and woodwork professionals to knowing almost every AC technician at the local cooling corporation, I have been everywhere, but it makes my work easier. I have done several garage home offices, but most are simple interior design works. The most challenging, however, needed me to find the clients a quality HVAC unit for the space. The space was separate from the main house, where they used a furnace and an electric heat pump for air conditioning, and they would need more than the window. Since I knew nothing about HVAC installation, I had to call the a/c worker from the local indoor comfort business. We had to check whether our local cooling corporation needed what we needed and whether an a/c worker could install it correctly. Unfortunately, they did not have it, but the town next to ours had it, so I had to schedule a day and drive there for the cooling specialist at that business to install it for us. I didn’t even know we needed a digital thermostat to help the unit run efficiently, especially since we’d be using solar and battery power. It sounded complicated, worse than when we’d had to understand how the electric heat pump we installed in our home worked. We have been fine with the unit since it was installed, and we’ve met more RV campers with good ideas on how to care for the unit, which has been helpful.

I also remember hearing about the horror stories from people who were rejected from cars during horrible car accidents. It’s scary because there were several major car accidents in my community when I was in high school and there were multiple students who died as a result. In one of the cases two of the students were ejected from the car during the crash just because of their lack of seat belt use. It’s always a scary story to hear about, especially when it affects people who are in your close community. And when you think about it, it’s a scary and ridiculous thing to die over when a seatbelt doesn’t even cause that much money to produce. I feel the same way about carbon monoxide detectors inside of homes. If you’re using gas appliances you cannot afford to go without having a carbon monoxide detector or you can die. Whenever a gas appliance fails to fully combust the fuel running through it, it can result in carbon monoxide exposure in the home. Since carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, you’ll have no idea it’s in your ear unless you’re using a cheap carbon monoxide detector. That’s why you can’t afford to go without them. Imagine dying because you didn’t want to spend $10 on a small piece of plastic that could easily save your life. Those are the sorts of things and mistakes I don’t want to make in life.

Everything seems to be going up in price now with inflation.

I can’t seem to afford anything when I go to the grocery store.

Even my bag of oranges has doubled in price over the last few months. And forget about affording gas for long road trips. I remember two and a half years ago when gasoline was under $3 a gallon. Now it’s getting close to $4 a gallon again in my area specifically. It’s hard to afford a long trip when the gas is just so expensive. It’s a lot easier to go on trips when you can afford the gasoline instead. There are some stores that will give you discounts on gasoline at certain gas stations if you buy subscriptions to their shopping plans. This can come in handy if you’re buying gasoline a lot, but you have to consider the cost of the subscription before you sign up. Definitely look at all the money beforehand. You also want to be careful about the cost of other things going up right now too. My air conditioner filters have gone up in price since before the pandemic. They used to be $14 each, now they’re $19 each. That’s why I decided to start buying my air conditioner filters and bulk off the internet so they don’t cost nearly as much money. It’s a lot easier to replace your air conditioner filter regularly when you can get the filters cheaper on the internet.with the bulk pricing, my air conditioner filters only end up being $10 a piece. That’s a huge savings by comparison.

I’ve been cooking a lot more over the past few months than ever before. I decided during the pandemic that I would learn how to cook for myself if I couldn’t eat at restaurants. And now I’m happy about all the money that I saved not eating out all the time. It was getting fairly daunting to say the least. I would go out with people and they would constantly want to get food at restaurants that were far beyond my budget and what I could afford in my capacity. And this isn’t the easiest thing to do in the world when you’ve got a lot of responsibilities to juggle that all consume you financially and physically. So a large part that’s why I have wanted to just kind of move on with my habits and just continue cooking as much as possible. I have gotten a lot of recipes off the internet and have even downloaded a few cooking books as well. I had a few dates recently that involved cooking and it was fun. Now I’ve been cooking so much that I’ve noticed that the cooking oils are starting to get into the air and I’m seeing them stick to the air conditioner filter. It makes the filter itself sticky in the dust kind of clings to it as well. If you’re going to cook as much as I do, you’re going to need to change your air conditioner filter a lot more frequently than you would otherwise. This is a really important thing to remember when you’re going about getting filters for your air conditioner every month.

Some of the high quality equipment that’s advertised on TV really isn’t as high quality as they say.

I hated the special sideways power drill that I bought on a whim one afternoon.

It basically allows you to get in at different angles instead of going straight with the normal power trip. Needless to say, it’s not a very good tool. I’ve learned that if you want to get good tools you need to go to a hardware store. Buying them off infomercials from TV is never going to result in a good solution. That’s as long as you’re using your tools for actual work and not just buying them to look at them. But this isn’t the only example of something that I bought off TV that inevitably disappointed me beyond belief. Another thing that I recently purchased that’s going to go in the garage for storage is this portable air conditioner. I thought a portable air conditioner would be better than a window air conditioner, but they’re actually worse. They take cold air from inside the house and blow it outside just to cool the hot compressor inside the portable air conditioner itself. If the portable air conditioner had its compressor outside, it wouldn’t need to waste cold air just to keep it from overheating. The inefficiency of a portable air conditioner is built into its design. That’s why I would rather use a window air conditioner if I had the choice. Sometimes window air conditioners are cheaper too, so that’s why I would rather stick to using those because I know they work.
